Small Town Dreams Sam Walton loved to dream big! Even as a little boy growing up in Missouri during the 1920s, he knew he wanted to help people. As Sam grew up, he became really good at sports and was a great student too! He went to college and studied hard. But what he really loved was learning about stores and how to sell things to people. Sam's First Big Adventure After finishing school and serving in the army, Sam had a wonderful idea. He wanted to open his very own store! In 1945, he borrowed some money from his father-in-law and bought a little store called "Walton's 5&10" in Newport, Arkansas.
