In the quiet city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, a young boy named Gerald Ford loved to look up at the stars. He dreamed big dreams, even though life wasn't always easy.
Did you know? Gerald wasn't always called Gerald! He was born Leslie Lynch King Jr., but his mom gave him a new name when she married Gerald Ford Sr., who became his loving stepfather.
Little Jerry, as friends called him, lived in a white house on Union Street. His family wasn't rich, but they had something more important - love and strong values. His stepfather taught him that working hard was the key to success.

"Son," Gerald Sr. would say, "treat everyone with respect, and always tell the truth." Young Jerry took these words to heart.
Jerry loved sports! He played football and became really good at it. But sometimes, other kids would tease him because he was a bit clumsy. Instead of getting mad, Jerry would just practice harder.
"I wasn't a natural athlete," Jerry later said. "But I learned that if you work hard enough, you can do amazing things!"

One day, something very surprising happened. The Vice President, Spiro Agnew, had to leave his job. President Nixon needed to pick someone new to be Vice President.
"We need someone honest and trustworthy," people said. "Someone like Jerry Ford!"
President Nixon agreed! He asked Jerry to be the new Vice President of the United States. This was a huge surprise for Jerry and his family.

The summer of 1974 was very hard for America. President Nixon was in big trouble. People found out he hadn't told the truth about something called Watergate. Everyone was very worried about what would happen next.
Big News: On August 8, 1974, President Nixon told everyone he would stop being president! No president had ever done this before.
Becoming President
The next day, Jerry Ford became our new president! He hadn't planned on this at all. One day he was Vice President, and the next day he was in charge of our whole country!
