Dreams from Hawaii
On a sunny day in 1961, a special baby boy was born in Honolulu, Hawaii . His name was Barack Obama. Little did anyone know that this baby would grow up to be the first Black president of the United States!
Fun Fact: Barack's nickname as a child was "Barry"
Barack's family was different from many other families. His mom, Ann, was from Kansas, and his dad, Barack Sr., came all the way from Kenya in Africa. This made Barack special - he had family roots from two different parts of the world!
Growing Up with Grandparents
When Barack was young, he lived with his grandparents, Madelyn and Stanley Dunham. They loved him very much and taught him important things about life. His grandma, who he called "Toot," worked at a bank, and his grandpa, "Gramps," always told funny stories.

Fun Fact: Barack's friends still called him "Barry" in college, but he decided to start using his full name, Barack, to feel closer to his roots.
Big City Dreams
After two years, Barack moved to New York City to study at Columbia University. The big city was very different from Hawaii! There were tall buildings instead of palm trees, and snow instead of beaches. ❄️

Moving to Chicago

Important Work: Barack helped people fix their schools, get better jobs, and make their streets safer. He learned that when people work together, they can do amazing things!

In Chicago, Barack met lots of people who taught him important lessons:

Making History at Harvard
At Harvard, Barack did something amazing. He became the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review! This was a very important student group that wrote about laws.
Special Moment: When Barack was chosen as president of the Law Review, it was in all the newspapers! Nobody who looked like him had ever done this before.
Meeting Michelle
Something even more wonderful happened during this time - Barack met Michelle Robinson! She was a lawyer at a big Chicago law firm where Barack worked during summer break.
Michelle was smart, kind, and believed in helping others too. When Barack first asked her on a date, she said:
"I'm supposed to be your work advisor, not your girlfriend!"
But Barack didn't give up. He took her to:

Teaching and Learning
