Small Beginnings
In a busy city called San Francisco, on October 10, 1967, a little boy named Gavin was born. His parents, William and Tessa Newsom, lived in a nice house in the city. The city had tall buildings, cable cars, and lots of people walking around.
Little Gavin had a special challenge when he was young. Reading was hard for him because he had something called dyslexia. This meant that letters and words would sometimes look mixed up to him. But Gavin didn't let this stop him!
"I had to work twice as hard as everyone else," Gavin would say later. "But this taught me to never give up."
His dad worked as a judge, and his mom worked helping other people. They taught Gavin that helping others was very important. Young Gavin would often go with his mom when she helped sick people at the hospital.
Fun Fact!
When Gavin was little, he loved playing baseball. He even dreamed of becoming a baseball player when he grew up!
School wasn't always easy for Gavin. Sometimes, other kids would laugh because he read slowly. But his teachers were very nice and helped him learn in different ways. They showed him that there are many ways to be smart!
Even as a young boy, Gavin liked to lead. When kids played at recess, he would often organize the games. He made sure everyone got a turn and had fun. His friends started noticing that he was good at solving problems.
Growing Up in San Francisco
Living in San Francisco was exciting for young Gavin. He loved riding the cable cars up and down the city's hills. On weekends, his family would visit the Golden Gate Bridge or walk through Golden Gate Park.
His family wasn't super rich, but they had enough. They taught Gavin that money wasn't the most important thing - helping others was what really mattered. This lesson would stay with him forever.
Important Memory: When Gavin was 10, he organized a lemonade stand. But instead of keeping the money, he gave it to help sick children at the hospital. This showed how much he cared about others, even as a kid!
As Gavin got older, he started getting better at reading. He learned that working hard could help him overcome any problem. His mom always told him, "Gavin, you can do anything if you try your best."
In middle school, Gavin started showing interest in how cities work. He would ask lots of questions about why some people had nice houses while others didn't. He wanted to know how to make things better for everyone.
First Signs of Leadership
By high school, Gavin was doing much better with his studies. He joined the student council and helped plan school events. Other students liked how he listened to their ideas and tried to make things better for everyone.
His teachers noticed something special about him. They saw how he cared about fixing problems and helping others. One teacher wrote in his yearbook, "Gavin, you will do big things someday!"
"I learned early that one person can make a difference if they work hard and care about others," Gavin would say years later.
After school, Gavin worked at different jobs. He learned about business and how to talk to all kinds of people. These early jobs taught him important lessons about working hard and being responsible.
The little boy who had trouble reading grew into a teenager who wasn't afraid of challenges. He learned that every problem had a solution if you worked hard enough to find it. These early years in San Francisco shaped who Gavin would become.
Life Lesson:
Gavin's story shows that having a hard time with something (like reading) doesn't mean you can't do great things. What matters most is trying your best and never giving up!
The Wine Country Entrepreneur
After finishing college, Gavin had a big dream. He wanted to start his own business! With help from family friend Gordon Getty, he opened a small wine shop called PlumpJack in 1992. The shop was in a tiny space in San Francisco.
Fun Business Fact!
Gavin named his shop "PlumpJack" after an opera character who loved to have fun and make people happy!
At first, running a business was very hard. Gavin had to learn lots of new things. He needed to:
Count money carefully
Talk nicely to customers
Learn about different kinds of wine
Make sure the shop was clean and pretty
Help his workers do a good job
Growing the Business
Gavin worked very hard. He woke up early every morning and stayed late at night. Sometimes he was tired, but he never gave up. His little wine shop started doing very well!
"Every morning, I would smile at each customer and ask how I could help them. Being nice to people is very important in business," Gavin would say.
Soon, one shop became many shops! PlumpJack grew bigger and bigger. Gavin opened:

He made sure his workers were happy. He paid them well and listened when they had problems. This made his businesses run better because everyone worked hard together.
Important Rule:
"Being kind to people is just as important as making money," Gavin would tell his workers.
Helping the Community
Even while busy with his shops, Gavin didn't forget about helping others. He used some of his money to help:
- Poor families get food
- Kids go to school

His businesses did more than just sell things. They made jobs for people who needed work. They made the city better. And they taught Gavin how to be a good leader.
"A good business should help make the whole community better," Gavin believed.

Success Secret:
Gavin's business grew because he worked hard AND cared about people. Both things are important!
His wine shops and other businesses kept growing. More and more people knew about PlumpJack. They liked how Gavin ran his business and treated people. This made him think about doing even bigger things to help his city.Taking the First Steps into Politics

"Everyone deserves to be happy and to marry the person they love," Gavin said.
Making New Friends
While working in city government, Gavin met lots of new people. Some became good friends who helped him with his ideas. Others didn't always agree with him, but Gavin learned how to work together anyway.
Working Together:

Being on the Board taught Gavin about all the big problems cities have. Sometimes there wasn't enough money to fix everything. Other times, people couldn't agree on what to do first.
But Gavin didn't give up! He kept trying to find good answers. He talked to lots of people to hear their ideas. He looked at what other cities did to solve problems.
