A Dream Takes Shape
On a sunny morning in 1905, in the pretty seaside town of Granville, France, a little boy named Christian Dior was born. His home was a beautiful pink and gray house that sat high on a cliff, overlooking the sparkling sea.
Little Christian loved to spend time in his mother's garden. Madame Dior grew the prettiest flowers you could imagine - roses in every color, sweet-smelling jasmine, and bright purple iris. These flowers would later inspire many of Christian's beautiful designs.
"My mother's garden was the most beautiful thing I knew as a child," Christian once said. "I would spend hours watching the flowers dance in the wind."
Unlike other boys his age who liked to play sports, Christian preferred to draw. He would sit for hours with his pencils and paper, sketching the elegant ladies who walked past his house. His parents wanted him to become a diplomat, but Christian had different dreams.
Fun Fact: Young Christian made money by selling his fashion sketches for just 10 cents each!
When Christian was 10 years old, his family moved to Paris. The big city opened his eyes to a whole new world of art and fashion. He would stand outside fancy stores, pressing his nose against the windows to look at the beautiful clothes inside.
But life wasn't always easy for young Christian. His family lost all their money when he was a teenager. To help make ends meet, he opened a small art gallery. He sold paintings by famous artists like Pablo Picasso, but what he really wanted was to design clothes.
First Steps into Fashion
Finally, in 1937, Christian got his big chance! A famous fashion designer named Robert Pifer gave him a job designing dresses. Christian was so happy, he could hardly believe it!
At night, after work, Christian would stay up late drawing more designs. He dreamed of opening his own fashion house one day. He wanted to make clothes that would make women feel beautiful and special.

Important Note: Christian's early love of art and nature would later help him create some of the most beautiful dresses in the world!
Even when things were hard, Christian never gave up on his dream. He knew that someday, he would change the way people thought about fashion. And as we'll soon see, that's exactly what he did! ✨War and Transformation
Dark clouds gathered over Paris in 1939. World War II had begun, and everything changed for Christian Dior and France. ️ The beautiful fashion stores closed their doors. Pretty dresses disappeared from shop windows.
Important Moment: During the war, women couldn't buy new clothes easily. They had to be very careful with fabric and make their old clothes last longer.
Christian had to join the army. He worked as a soldier on a farm in the south of France. But even while growing vegetables, he never stopped dreaming about beautiful clothes.
"Even in the darkest times, I held onto my pencils and kept drawing. Fashion was my light," Christian later wrote in his diary.
The war made everything gray and sad. Women had to wear plain, boxy clothes because there wasn't enough fabric. The government said people could only use a tiny bit of cloth to make each piece of clothing.
Dreams During Dark Days
Christian watched as his beloved Paris changed. The elegant ladies who once wore beautiful dresses now wore simple, plain clothes. But in his mind, he started planning something special. He wanted to bring back pretty clothes after the war ended.
During these hard times, Christian worked for a fashion house that made dresses for wives of German officers and French women. It wasn't easy, but it helped him learn more about making clothes.
Special Note: Christian believed that pretty clothes could help people feel happy again after the sad war years.
Hope Returns to Paris
Finally, in 1945, the war ended! Paris slowly started to wake up from its long, dark sleep. People were ready for something new and beautiful.
A rich businessman named Marcel Boussac met Christian. Marcel asked, "Would you like to design clothes for my fashion house?"
But Christian had an even bigger idea. "I want to open my own fashion house," he said bravely. "I want to create a whole new way of dressing for women!"

Special Moment: This was the day Christian would show his very first collection of dresses to the world. Nobody knew they were about to see something amazing!
The models were getting ready upstairs. They put on beautiful new dresses that looked very different from the plain clothes people wore during the war. These dresses had full, swishy skirts and tiny waists.
"I want women to feel like flowers," Christian told his helpers as they rushed around fixing last-minute details.
The Magic Begins
At 10:30 in the morning, fancy cars started arriving. Important people from fashion magazines, newspaper writers, and rich ladies who loved pretty clothes came to see Christian's show.

Tiny waists made with special tight bands
Hidden pieces inside to make the dresses stand out just right
Lots and lots of pretty fabric
Fighting for Fabric
Back then, there were still rules about how much fabric people could use for clothes. Many people said, "You can't use that much fabric! It's not fair!"
"Beauty should not have limits," Christian replied. "Women deserve to feel special again after such hard times."
Important News: Some people tried to stop women wearing New Look dresses on the streets! But the pretty style was too popular to stop.
