How Ancient Rome Got Its Name: Romulus, Remus, and the City of Legends

The Royal Babies in Danger

Long ago, in a place called Alba Longa, there lived a princess named Rhea Silvia. She was very beautiful and kind. One day, something magical happened – she had twin baby boys!

Fun Fact: The twins were named Romulus and Remus. They would grow up to be very important!

But not everyone was happy about the babies. The mean King Amulius, who was Rhea's uncle, was very angry. He was afraid the twins would take his crown when they grew up. You see, the crown really belonged to their grandfather, Numitor, but King Amulius had stolen it!

"These babies are dangerous!" King Amulius shouted. His face turned red with anger. "They must go away!"

The king ordered his soldiers to take the crying babies from their mother. Poor Rhea Silvia was very sad. She watched as they carried her precious boys away.

“Please don’t hurt my babies!” she cried. But the mean king wouldn’t listen.

The soldiers put tiny Romulus and Remus in a wooden basket. Then they took the basket to the Tiber River. The river was big and wild, with fast-moving water.

"Goodbye, little princes," said one soldier, as he placed the basket in the water. The basket bobbed up and down as it floated away.

But something amazing happened! The basket didn't sink. Instead, it floated gently down the river until it reached a quiet spot near a fig tree. This tree was special – it was called the Ficus Ruminalis.

Magic Alert! A friendly she-wolf found the babies! In those days, people believed wolves were magical animals.

The wolf heard the babies crying and felt sorry for them. Instead of being scary, she was very gentle. She carried them to her warm cave and fed them just like they were her own wolf cubs!

A woodpecker helped too! It brought food for the babies. The wolf and the woodpecker made sure Romulus and Remus stayed safe and healthy.

Days passed, and then something else wonderful happened. A shepherd named Faustulus was walking near the cave when he heard baby sounds. He peeked inside and couldn't believe his eyes!

"By the gods!" he gasped. "These must be special children if a wolf is taking care of them!"

Faustulus gently picked up both babies. He decided to take them home to his wife, Acca Larentia. They had always wanted children of their own.

“We will raise them as our own,” Faustulus told his wife. “They will be strong and brave!”

And so began the amazing story of Romulus and Remus. The twin boys who would one day do something incredible – they would build a city called Rome! But that's just the start of their exciting adventure…

Important Characters: Rhea Silvia (the twins’ mother), King Amulius (the mean king), Faustulus (the kind shepherd), and the magical she-wolf

The babies were safe now, but their biggest adventures were still to come. Living with Faustulus and Acca Larentia, they would grow up to be strong and brave boys who would change the world forever.

Growing Up in the Shepherd’s Home

Romulus and Remus grew bigger and stronger each day. The shepherd’s home was full of love and fun! Faustulus and Acca Larentia taught them many cool things.

Special Skills: The twins learned to take care of sheep, climb hills, and find food in the forest. They were becoming very brave!

Every morning, the boys would help Faustulus with the sheep. They learned to use a special stick called a staff to keep the sheep safe.

"Watch out for wolves!" Faustulus would say. The boys would giggle, thinking about their wolf-mother who had saved them.

“We’re not scared of wolves,” Romulus would say proudly. “They’re our friends!”

As they grew older, the twins became super strong. They could run faster than anyone else! They were good at catching bad guys who tried to steal sheep from other shepherds. Everyone started to notice how special they were.

Twin Powers: Fast running, brave fighting, smart thinking, and kind hearts

One day, while playing near the river, Remus found an old crown in the mud. It was very pretty and sparkly. ✨

"Look what I found!" he called to Romulus. The twins showed it to Faustulus, whose eyes got very big.

Faustulus knew it was time to tell them the truth. He sat the boys down and told them a very important story:

“You are not really shepherd boys. You are princes! Your mother is Princess Rhea Silvia, and your grandfather is King Numitor. The mean King Amulius tried to hurt you when you were babies.”

The twins could hardly believe it! They were princes! But they weren’t happy about the mean king who had been so cruel to their mother.

Some people in the village didn’t like that Romulus and Remus were so strong and brave. They were jealous. The boys often had to defend themselves from bullies.

“We must stick together,” Romulus told his brother. “One day, we’ll build our own city where everyone can be safe and happy!”

The twins started dreaming big dreams. They wanted to help people and make things better. But first, they had to deal with mean King Amulius.

Growing Leadership: Other young shepherds started following Romulus and Remus. They looked up to the twins and wanted to be like them.

Every night, the boys would sit on a hill and look at the stars. They would talk about their plans and dreams. They wanted to build something amazing – but they didn’t know yet that they would create one of the most famous cities ever!

Even though they lived simply, the twins never forgot what Faustulus told them about being princes. They started watching the king’s castle from far away, planning how they would help their real family.

Their shepherd parents had taught them to be brave and kind. Now it was time to use those lessons to do something big. The twins were ready for their next big adventure – taking back their family’s crown!

The Battle for the Crown

The time had come for Romulus and Remus to be brave! They marched to King Amulius’s castle with their friends. Their hearts were beating fast, but they weren’t scared.

Fun Fact: The twins had grown into strong young men. They could fight better than any of the king’s soldiers!

“Remember what Faustulus taught us,” Romulus whispered to Remus. “We must be smart and quick!”

“Like the wolf who saved us,” Remus replied with a smile. “Quick and clever!”

When they got to the castle, they saw their grandfather Numitor. He was working in the garden because mean King Amulius had made him do all the hard jobs.

“Grandfather!” the twins called out. “We are your grandsons! We’ve come to help you!”

Numitor looked at the boys with tears in his eyes. He knew right away these were his special grandsons!

The Plan: Get into the castle, find King Amulius, and take back the crown!

The twins and their friends were very sneaky. They climbed over the castle walls when no one was looking. ‍♂️

Inside the castle, they found King Amulius sitting on his throne. He was very surprised to see them!

“Who dares enter my castle?” shouted King Amulius.

“We are the sons of Princess Rhea Silvia!” Romulus said bravely. “And we’ve come to take back our grandfather’s crown!”

The Big Fight: The twins were much stronger than King Amulius. They won the fight very quickly!

After they beat King Amulius, they put their grandfather Numitor back on the throne. Everyone in the kingdom was so happy!

Their mother, Rhea Silvia, was freed from the place where the mean king had locked her up. She hugged her boys tight and couldn’t stop crying happy tears.

“My brave sons,” she said. “You have saved us all!”

But Romulus and Remus knew they had more work to do. They wanted to build their own city! They said goodbye to their family and set off to find the perfect spot.

“We need a place where we can make a new home,” said Romulus.
“A place where everyone can be happy and safe,” added Remus.

As they walked away from their grandfather’s kingdom, they felt excited. They were going to build something amazing! But they didn’t know that picking the right spot would be very hard.

The twins walked for many days. They crossed rivers, climbed hills, and looked for the best place to build their city. They wanted it to be perfect!

“Look at those seven hills!” Romulus pointed. “They’re so beautiful!”

“Yes,” said Remus. “But which hill is the best for our new city?”

The Seven Hills Challenge

Romulus and Remus stood on top of a big hill, looking at all the land around them. The sun was bright, and the wind felt nice on their faces.

“This spot is perfect!” Romulus said, pointing to the Palatine Hill.

“No, brother,” Remus shook his head. “The Aventine Hill is better!” He pointed to another hill nearby.

The Seven Hills: The brothers were looking at the famous seven hills of Rome. Each hill was special in its own way!

They decided to ask the gods for help. In those days, people would look for special signs from the sky to make big choices.

Romulus’s Hill: The Palatine – High and strong
Remus’s Hill: The Aventine – Wide and pretty

“Let’s each sit on our hill,” said Remus. “The first one to see special birds will win!”

“That’s fair,” Romulus agreed. “The gods will help us choose!”

Early the next morning, both brothers sat on their hills. They looked up at the sky and waited. And waited. And waited some more! ⏰

Remus jumped up first. “Look! I see six birds!” he shouted happily.

But just then, something amazing happened! Twelve birds flew over Romulus’s hill!

The Big Problem: Both brothers thought they had won. This made them very angry with each other.

“I saw my birds first!” Remus yelled.

“But I saw more birds!” Romulus shouted back.

Their friends tried to help them calm down. But the brothers were too mad to listen.

Romulus started drawing a line in the dirt around his hill. This line would be the wall of his new city. He told everyone, “Nobody can cross this line!”

But Remus was so angry, he jumped right over the line!

“See?” Remus laughed. “Your wall isn’t so special!”

This made Romulus very, very angry. He had never been so mad at his brother before. His face turned red, and his hands shook.

What happened next was very sad. The brothers started fighting. They pushed and shoved each other. Their friends tried to stop them, but it was too late.

Warning: Never let anger make you hurt someone you love!

In his anger, Romulus pushed Remus very hard. Remus fell and hit his head on a big rock. He didn’t get up.

Romulus looked down at his brother. All his anger went away, replaced by sadness. He had done something terrible that he could never take back.

The happy brothers who had grown up together, who had fought bad King Amulius together, would never play or laugh together again.

Romulus fell to his knees and cried. His friends tried to comfort him, but nothing could make him feel better.

“What have I done?” Romulus whispered. “What have I done to my brother?”

The birds that had caused all the trouble flew away into the sunset. The sky turned orange and red, like it was crying too.

Now Romulus would have to build his city alone. But first, he had to say goodbye to his brother. He picked beautiful flowers and placed them where Remus had fallen.

As the stars came out that night, Romulus made a promise. He would build the greatest city ever – a city that would make his brother proud.

A City Rises from Sorrow

The morning sun rose over the Palatine Hill. Romulus stood alone, his heart heavy. But he knew he had to be strong. It was time to build his city.

“Today,” he said to his friends, “we start building Rome!”

Fun Fact: The city got its name from Romulus, who became its first leader.

First, Romulus took a big plow. He tied it to a strong ox. Together, they drew a special line around the whole hill. This line would show where the city walls would go. ⚔️

His helper Marcus asked, “Why do we need walls?”

“The walls will keep our people safe,” Romulus explained. “They will make us strong.”

City Needs: Walls, Houses, Roads, Wells

More people came to help build the city. They carried big stones and logs. Some made bricks from mud and straw. Others dug deep holes for strong house posts. ️

“We need more helpers,” said Romulus. “Let’s invite people from other places to live here!”

So Romulus sent his friends to tell everyone about the new city. They went to nearby villages and farms. They said, “Come to Rome! Help us build something special!”

Good News: Many people wanted to join! They brought their families and their tools.

Some were farmers who knew how to grow food. Others were builders who could make strong houses. There were also people who could make pretty things like pots and clothes. ‍

“Everyone has something special to share,” Romulus told the new people. “Together, we will make Rome great!”

But building a city was hard work. Sometimes people got tired and cranky.

“The sun is too hot!” one worker complained.

“These stones are too heavy!” said another.

Romulus worked beside them, carrying stones and digging holes. He showed them that a leader should work just as hard as everyone else.

Remember: Good leaders help their people and work hard!

Day after day, the city grew bigger. Houses popped up like mushrooms. Streets wound between them like snakes. Wells brought up cool, fresh water.

Children played in the new streets. Women hung clothes to dry in the warm sun. Men built shops to sell food and tools. The city was coming alive!

Every evening, Romulus would climb to the top of the hill. He would look at what they had built that day. Sometimes, he thought about his brother Remus.

“I wish you could see this,” he would whisper to the stars.

The city needed rules too. Romulus made good rules to help everyone live together nicely. “Be kind to each other,” was his first rule.

He picked helpers called senators. They wore special purple clothes and helped make decisions. They met in a big building made just for them.

As more people came to Rome, they needed more houses. They started building on other hills too. Soon, all seven hills had houses and shops on them!

One day, a little girl tugged on Romulus’s sleeve. “Why did you build our city here?” she asked.

“Because,” Romulus smiled, “this is where the gods sent their signs. This is where Rome was meant to be.”

The little girl looked around at the busy streets and happy people. “I think the gods chose well,” she said.

That night, Romulus felt proud. His city was growing strong. People were happy. And somewhere, he hoped, his brother Remus was watching and smiling too. ⭐

A Legend Lives Forever

Rome grew bigger and stronger every day. More people came from far away to live in the new city. Romulus worked hard to make everyone feel at home.

But there was one big problem. Most of the people who came to Rome were men. They needed families to help the city grow.

City Problem: Rome needed more women to start families and make the city stronger!

Romulus had an idea. He planned a big party and invited the Sabine people who lived nearby. The Sabines came with their daughters, all dressed in pretty clothes.

“Welcome to our feast!” Romulus called out. “Let’s celebrate together!”

During the party, the Roman men asked the Sabine women to marry them and live in Rome. At first, the Sabine families were angry. But soon they saw how nice Rome was. Many decided to join the city too! ‍ ‍ ‍

“Now we are all one big family,” Romulus said. “Romans and Sabines together!”

As king, Romulus made sure everyone had what they needed:

Romulus’s Good Ideas: Fair Laws, Strong Army, Happy Families

He split the people into groups called tribes. Each tribe had its own special job to help the city. Some were builders, others were farmers, and some were soldiers. ‍♂️

Fun Fact: Even today, people still tell stories about how Romulus made Rome strong!

One stormy day, when Romulus was very old, something amazing happened. He was talking to his people on Mars Field when a bright light filled the sky. ⚡

“Look!” someone shouted. “The gods are taking Romulus to live with them!”

When the light faded, Romulus was gone. The people believed the gods had turned him into a god named Quirinus. They built a special temple to remember him.

Before he left, Romulus told his people something important: “Remember, Rome wasn’t built in one day. Keep working hard, be kind to each other, and Rome will last forever!”

Romulus’s Last Lesson: Good things take time and teamwork!

And he was right! Rome did grow into one of the biggest and most famous cities ever. People still visit Rome today to see its old buildings and learn its amazing stories. ️

The story of Romulus and Remus, the wolf that saved them, and how they started Rome has been told for thousands of years. It reminds us that even little babies can grow up to do big things!

Today, you can see pictures of the wolf all over Rome. She reminds people how their great city began with two tiny babies and one kind wolf.

“What happened to the wolf?” children often ask.

The wolf lived happily in the woods near Rome, watching over the city she helped create. Some say her spirit still protects Rome today.

And so, the legend of how Rome got its name lives on. It teaches us that dreams can come true if we work hard and never give up – just like Romulus did! ⭐
