The sun beat down on young Lucius's face as he watched the men prepare their ropes. He had never seen anything like this before! His father, a Roman general, had brought him to North Africa to see something amazing - the capture of war elephants.

Lucius walked up the ramp first, holding out the treats. "Come on, Maximus. You can do it!"
Slowly, carefully, the young elephant followed him up the ramp and onto the ship. Everyone cheered!
As the ship sailed away from the African coast, Lucius stood next to Maximus's pen on the deck. The elephant's trunk rested gently on his shoulder, like a friend's hand.
