Marcus peered into the empty Trevi Fountain, his face scrunched with worry. Where did all the water go? The big fountain that usually splashed and danced was now as dry as a desert.
"Lucia, come look at this!" he called to his twin sister. The morning sun made the white marble statues glow, but something was very wrong.
Lucia ran over, her dark curls bouncing. "That's so weird! The fountain is never empty."
The twins knew a lot about Rome's fountains. Their family had worked with the city's water for hundreds of years. Their dad was a water engineer, just like their grandpa had been.
"Look!" Lucia pointed at the ground. "There are no puddles anywhere. The water didn't splash out – it just… vanished!"
More people gathered around the empty fountain. Some looked angry, others worried. An old lady waved her cane in the air.
"First my kitchen tap, now this!" she shouted. "How will I water my plants?"

A knock at the door made them jump. Outside stood Mr. Romano, an old man who had worked with their grandfather for many years.
“Ah, the young water engineers!” he smiled, his eyes twinkling. “I heard about the fountains. I thought you might need my help.”
Marcus showed him the journal. “Did you know about this, Mr. Romano?”
The old man’s eyes grew wide. “Your grandfather’s secret notebook! He told me about this before he…” Mr. Romano’s voice got soft. “Before he left us.”
The Hidden Network
“Come with me,” Mr. Romano said. He led them to a tiny door behind their father’s workshop. “This leads to the underground aqueduct network.”
They followed him down old stone steps. Their flashlights made dancing shadows on the wet walls.
“Your family has watched over Rome’s water for generations,” Mr. Romano explained. “These tunnels are like a giant puzzle. Only special people know how they work.”
Lucia studied the map from the journal. “Look! These symbols match the marks on the walls!”
“Smart girl,” Mr. Romano nodded. “Your grandfather left these marks as guides. But someone has been changing them.”
“Changing them?” Marcus asked. “Who would do that?”
Mr. Romano’s face got serious. “Someone who wants to control Rome’s water. Yesterday, I saw a strange man down here. He was wearing a black coat and carrying tools.”
The Ancient Map
Back in the workshop, they spread out the old map. It showed a complex web of tunnels under the city.
“Each line is a water path,” Mr. Romano explained. “See this big star? That’s the main control room. But these new marks…” He pointed to fresh ink on the map. “Someone added these recently.”
Lucia grabbed her notebook and started copying the symbols. “Maybe if we crack this code, we can find out what’s happening!”
Suddenly, they heard footsteps outside. Through the window, they saw a man in a black coat hurrying past.
“That’s him!” Mr. Romano whispered. “The man I saw in the tunnels!”
Marcus and Lucia looked at each other. Their simple mystery about empty fountains had just gotten much bigger – and maybe a little dangerous.
“We need to tell Dad,” Marcus said.

Suddenly, they heard footsteps. A deep voice echoed through the tunnel. “Someone’s been messing with my work!”

Lucia grabbed Marcus and pulled him behind a big pipe. They held their breath as the man in the black coat entered.
He walked straight to the broken wheel. “What? The rod is gone!” He sounded angry.
Lucia whispered super quietly to Marcus, “We need to remember everything about him!”
They watched as the man pulled more metal rods from his pocket. He started putting them in different wheels.
“If these kids keep snooping,” he muttered, “all my plans will be ruined!”
Lucia’s Clever Plan
While hiding, Lucia noticed something important. There was a pattern to where the man put the rods!
She quickly drew it in her notebook. Each spot he chose made water flow away from the fountains instead of toward them!
When the man finally left, the twins came out of hiding.
“Lucia,” Marcus said, “you’re a genius! Now we know how he’s stopping the water!”
“And look what he dropped!” Lucia picked up a piece of paper. It had the name of a company: “Modern Water Solutions.”
Race to Fix It
Working together, Marcus and Lucia carefully removed all the metal rods. Each time they pulled one out, they heard water rushing through the pipes again!
“We did it!” Marcus cheered. But their celebration didn’t last long.
More footsteps were coming – lots of them! And voices too!
“Quick!” Lucia grabbed the metal rods as evidence. “We need to tell Mr. Romano everything!”
They ran through the tunnels, their hearts pounding. Behind them, angry voices echoed off the walls.
“Those kids are ruining everything!” It was the man in the black coat again.
But Marcus and Lucia were faster. They knew these tunnels now. They had their grandfather’s map, their courage, and most importantly – they had proof!
As they rushed toward safety, they could hear water flowing properly through the pipes again. The fountains would start working soon!

“Mom! Dad!” the twins called out.
The men in black coats appeared from the tunnel. But this time, they had nowhere to run.

The police moved quickly. The bad guys were caught!
“We found their whole plan,” a police officer said. “They wanted to force Rome to buy water from their company.”
The crowd cheered as the men were led away. Water flowed freely from all the fountains again.
