Wings of Origin
On a cool morning in 1916, something amazing happened in Munich, Germany. A small group of dreamers started a company that would change how we travel forever. They called it BMW - Bayerische Motoren Werke.
Fun Fact: BMW first made engines for airplanes, not cars! Imagine that - a car company that started by helping planes fly! ✈️
Karl Rapp, one of the founders, had a big dream. He wanted to build the best airplane engines in the world. In his workshop, workers carefully put together powerful engines piece by piece. The sound of tools clicking and whirring filled the air as they worked.
"We need to make these engines perfect," Karl would say to his team. "They will help pilots soar through the clouds!"
The First Big Challenge
It wasn't easy being a new company. World War I was happening, and everyone needed airplane engines. The factory workers had to work extra hard. They made special engines called the IIIa. These engines were so good that pilots loved them!
"Our engines must be as reliable as the sunrise," Franz Josef Popp, another founder, would often tell his workers. "Lives depend on them."
Growing Stronger
By 1918, BMW had grown a lot. They now had:
Over 3,500 workers
A bigger factory
Better tools
Many happy customers ✈️
The Special Logo
During this time, BMW created its famous logo. It shows blue and white squares in a circle. Many people think it looks like a spinning airplane propeller against the sky!
Did You Know? The blue and white colors in BMW's logo are the same as Bavaria's flag - the region in Germany where BMW started!
Looking to the Future
Even though BMW started by making airplane engines, they knew they needed to think bigger. The world was changing fast. New kinds of transportation were coming. The company's leaders started thinking about what else they could build.
Franz looked out the factory window one evening. "Soon," he said, "we will make more than just airplane engines. We will help people travel in new ways."
Little did Franz know just how right he was. BMW was about to start an amazing journey. From the skies above Munich, they would soon find new ways to move people around the world.
Important Achievement: By the end of 1918, BMW had become one of the best airplane engine makers in all of Germany!
The sun was setting on BMW's first chapter as an airplane engine company. But this was just the beginning of their story. Big changes were coming, and BMW was ready to face them with courage and creativity. From Skies to Streets
