A Special Baby on Mount Cyllene
High up on Mount Cyllene, where clouds touched the rocky peaks, a baby was born who would change the world. This wasn't just any baby - this was Hermes, son of mighty Zeus and gentle Maia.
The moment little Hermes opened his eyes, everyone knew he was different. Most babies cry and sleep, but not Hermes! He smiled and looked around with bright, clever eyes.
"What a wonderful child!" Maia whispered, cradling her newborn son. She lived in a cozy cave on the mountain, away from the busy world below.
But baby Hermes had other plans. Before the sun had set on his first day, he did something amazing. He stood up and walked!
"My goodness!" Maia gasped. "You're only a few hours old!"
Fun Fact: Most babies take about a year to walk, but Hermes did it on his first day!
Little Hermes giggled and clapped his tiny hands. He wasn't just walking - he was dancing! His feet seemed to barely touch the ground, like he was floating on air.
"You are truly special," Maia said proudly. "Just like your father Zeus."
As if hearing his name, thunder rumbled in the distance. Zeus, the king of all gods, was watching his new son with pride. He knew Hermes would do great things.
But what made Hermes really special wasn't just his quick feet. It was his clever mind! While other babies played with rattles, Hermes was already thinking up fun tricks and games.
He found ways to make his mother laugh by making funny faces. He learned to whistle before he could talk. And when birds flew past their cave, he would wave and try to copy their songs.
"You're going to be quite the handful," Maia smiled, watching her son try to catch a sunbeam. "But I can tell you're going to make the world more interesting!"
The mountain winds seemed to whisper about the special baby who lived in the cave. Animals would stop to peek in, curious about the infant who could already walk and play. Even the stars seemed to twinkle more brightly over Mount Cyllene at night.
By the end of his first day, Hermes had already shown he was no ordinary baby. He could:
• Walk and dance• Make music with his voice• Think up clever tricks• Make everyone around him smile
That night, as Maia tucked her special son into bed, she noticed something strange. His tiny feet were glowing softly, like they were touched by starlight. She didn't know it then, but those feet would one day carry messages across the heavens.
Little Hermes smiled in his sleep, dreaming of all the adventures waiting for him. The cave felt warm and cozy, but his heart yearned for the wide world beyond. Tomorrow would bring new chances to explore, new tricks to try, and new ways to make people happy.
Outside the cave, a cool breeze carried the sweet smell of spring flowers. The moon cast silver light on Mount Cyllene, where a very special baby slept - a baby who would grow up to be one of the most beloved gods in all of Greece.
Special Note: Hermes was different from the start. His quick mind and magical abilities showed that he was meant for amazing things!
The stars twinkled above Mount Cyllene, keeping watch over the sleeping baby god. Tomorrow would bring new adventures, but for now, Hermes dreamed peaceful dreams in his mountain home, while his mother Maia watched over him with love and wonder in her heart. The Great Cattle Chase
The sun had barely risen when little Hermes felt an itch for adventure. Even though he was just a few days old, he was already tired of staying in the cave.
"I want to do something exciting!" he thought, bouncing on his tiny feet. His eyes sparkled with mischief as he looked down the mountain.
Far below, in the green fields of Thessaly, Hermes saw something that made him grin - a herd of beautiful cattle. These weren't just any cows - they belonged to his big brother Apollo, the sun god!
Magic Moment: Apollo's cattle were special - they glowed like golden sunshine! ✨
"What a fun game this will be!" Hermes giggled. Quick as a wink, he zoomed down the mountain.
The cattle were grazing peacefully when Hermes arrived. He was so small that the biggest cow could have stepped on him like an ant! But Hermes wasn't scared.
"Hello, beautiful cows!" he said cheerfully. "Would you like to play a game?"
The cattle looked at him with their big brown eyes. Hermes had a clever plan. He grabbed some leafy branches and tied them to the cows' feet, like tiny brooms.
"Now walk backwards!" he told them. The cows did exactly what he said, leaving very confusing tracks in the dirt.
As the cattle walked backwards, their footprints pointed the wrong way! Anyone following their tracks would go in the opposite direction of where Hermes was really taking them.
But Hermes wasn't done being clever! Along the way, he found something special - a turtle shell. Looking at its smooth shape gave him an idea.
"This would make wonderful music!" he declared. He stretched strings across the shell, creating the very first lyre - a beautiful musical instrument.
While walking with the cattle, Hermes played his new lyre and sang:
"Moo, moo, dance along,
This is my happy cattle song!
Walking backwards, what a sight,
Making music in the night!"
But soon, Apollo noticed his missing cattle. The sun god wasn't happy! He followed the confusing tracks all over Greece.
"Who could have done this?" Apollo wondered, scratching his head at the backward footprints.
Finally, Apollo found Hermes back in his cave, pretending to be an innocent baby. But the clever little god had hidden the cattle in a nearby cave.
"Where are my cattle, little brother?" Apollo asked, trying to look stern.
Hermes just smiled and started playing his new lyre. The music was so beautiful that Apollo forgot all about being angry!
Amazing Fact: Hermes invented the first lyre - and it became Apollo's favorite instrument!
"Tell you what," Hermes said. "You can have your cattle back, and I'll give you this lyre too!"
Apollo was so happy with the musical gift that he wasn't mad anymore. In fact, he started laughing at how his tiny baby brother had played such a clever trick.
"You may be small," Apollo said, "but you're very smart! We're going to be good friends, I can tell."
That night, as the stars came out, Apollo played the lyre while Hermes danced. The cattle watched from their field, swaying to the sweet music.
Zeus looked down from Mount Olympus and smiled. His youngest son was proving to be quite special indeed - clever enough to trick a god, but wise enough to make things right with a gift of music.A Special Job from Zeus
The morning after his adventure with Apollo's cattle, Hermes woke up to a booming voice. "Hermes, my son! Come to Mount Olympus!" It was Zeus, the king of all gods. ⚡
Hermes jumped up excitedly. "My first trip to Mount Olympus!" he squealed.
Fun Fact: Mount Olympus was the highest mountain in Greece, where all the gods lived! ️
When Hermes arrived, Zeus sat on his golden throne. He was smiling at his clever young son.
"Hermes," Zeus said warmly, "I have watched how quick and smart you are. I have a special job for you."
Hermes bounced on his toes. "What kind of job, father?"
"I want you to be my messenger. You will carry important news to gods and people all over the world!"
Zeus clapped his hands, and two magical items appeared:
Golden winged sandals that could fly faster than the wind
A special staff called a caduceus, with two friendly snakes wrapped around it
"These will help you with your new job," Zeus explained. "The sandals will make you the fastest god ever, and the caduceus will show everyone you're my official messenger."
Hermes put on the sandals, and they lifted him right off the ground! The caduceus felt warm and friendly in his hand, and the snakes winked at him.
"I have your first task ready," Zeus said. "Can you deliver this important message to Poseidon under the sea?"
"Under the sea? Cool!" Hermes zipped away so fast he left a little trail of clouds behind him.
"Zoom, zoom, through the sky,
Messages to low and high!
Fast as lightning, quick as light,
Hermes speeds through day and night!"
Down into the deep blue sea Hermes flew. Fish stared as he zoomed past. His magic sandals kept him dry!
He found Poseidon in his underwater palace. The sea god was surprised to see such a young messenger.
"A message from Zeus?" Poseidon raised his eyebrows. "Well, you got here very quickly!"
After delivering the message, Hermes had many more tasks. He carried news to:
Hermes' First Day of Messages:
• The sunrise goddess in the east
• The moon goddess in the west
• Heroes fighting monsters on Earth ️
• Other gods all over the world ⭐
At the end of the day, Hermes flew back to Mount Olympus. Zeus was beaming with pride.
"You delivered every message perfectly!" Zeus patted Hermes on the head. "And faster than any messenger before!"
All the gods gathered to welcome their new messenger. Even Apollo was there, playing the lyre Hermes had given him.
"Speech! Speech!" the gods called out.
Hermes stood up tall. "I promise to be the best messenger ever! I'll be quick and clever, and I'll never lose a single message!"
That night, as stars twinkled above Mount Olympus, Hermes practiced flying loops and swirls with his new sandals. His caduceus glowed softly, and the snakes hummed a happy tune.
He had found his special job in the world, and he couldn't wait for tomorrow's adventures! The Helpful Guardian
The sun rose bright over Greece as Hermes zipped through the morning sky. His golden sandals sparkled, and his caduceus glowed warmly. He loved his job as messenger, but today he noticed something different.
"Help! I'm lost!" a voice called from below.
Hermes looked down to see a young girl wandering alone on a twisted path. He flew down to meet her.
"Don't be scared," he said gently. "I'm Hermes. Why are you traveling alone?"
"I'm trying to get home to Athens," she sniffled. "But I took a wrong turn."
Special Moment: This was when Hermes discovered his love for helping lost travelers!
"I can help you!" Hermes smiled. "Follow the path I light up with my caduceus."
The magic staff glowed brightly, showing the safest way home. The girl's eyes lit up with joy.
"Through dark woods and stormy weather,
Hermes guides all paths together.
Lost ones find their way back home,
No traveler ever walks alone!"
After helping the girl, Hermes noticed more travelers needing help. He saw:
• Merchants carrying heavy loads ️
• Sailors lost at sea ⛵
• Shepherds searching for sheep
• Heroes on dangerous quests ⚔️
"I can help them all!" Hermes declared.
He flew to a group of tired merchants. "Rest here," he said, pointing to a safe cave. "There's fresh water inside."
The merchants smiled. "Thank you, kind god! We'll leave you some honey as thanks!"
Next, Hermes spotted a ship spinning in circles on the sea. The sailors couldn't find their way in the fog.
His caduceus parted the fog like a curtain, showing the sailors the way to shore. They cheered and tossed flowers into the sea to thank him!
"Look!" called a voice from Olympus. It was Zeus, watching his son with pride.
"Hermes isn't just delivering messages," Zeus smiled. "He's becoming a true guardian of travelers!"
The other gods gathered to watch. Even grumpy old Ares had to admit Hermes was doing a good job.
"He makes the roads safer for everyone," Athena nodded wisely.
That evening, Hermes helped a brave hero named Perseus. The hero was on a dangerous quest to fight a monster.
"This way is safer," Hermes warned, pointing with his caduceus. "And take these magic shoes - they'll help you fly!"
Perseus was so thankful, he promised to always honor Hermes in his stories.
As the stars came out, Hermes sat on a cloud and watched all the...
