Long ago, in a land called Greece, there was a special city named Sparta. It wasn't like other cities with fancy buildings and art. Sparta was different. It was a city built for one thing – making the best warriors in the world! ️
Young Lycos stood at the edge of the city, his small hand gripping his mother's cloak. The wind carried the sounds of marching feet and clashing swords from the training grounds. His eyes grew wide as he watched the strong Spartan warriors march past in perfect rows.
"Mother, why is our city so different from Athens?" Lycos asked, thinking of the stories he'd heard about the beautiful buildings in other Greek cities.

In the big meeting room, King Leonidas spread out a map. He pointed to a narrow path between tall mountains.
“Here,” he said, “at Thermopylae. This is where we will meet them.”

Queen Gorgo walked into the room. She was older now, and married to Leonidas. Her eyes were fierce and proud.
“The women of Sparta will keep the city strong while you’re gone,” she said. “Come back with your shield – or on it.” ️

“Push!” yelled the warriors. Their shields locked together even tighter.

The Spartans fought harder than ever. They used every trick they knew. When their spears broke, they fought with swords. When their swords broke, they fought with their hands!
