The Portuguese Empire: Navigators and Explorers Who Spanned the Globe

A Bold New Dream

The sun was rising over Lisbon, Portugal in 1415. A young prince named Henry looked out over the ocean. He had big dreams about what might be across those waters.

Fun Fact: Prince Henry was called “The Navigator” because he loved ships and exploring!

“One day,” Henry said to himself, “we will know what lies beyond those waves.” He wanted to find new places and make friends with people in far-away lands.

The School by the Sea

Prince Henry did something no one had done before. He built a special school right next to the ocean!

At this school, sailors learned how to:

  • Read maps
  • Use the stars to find their way
  • Build better ships
  • Understand wind and waves

“We must learn before we can explore,” Prince Henry told his students. “The ocean is big, but we can be ready for it!”

New Tools for Big Adventures

Henry’s sailors got cool new tools to help them sail better. They had special boats called caravels. These boats could sail fast and turn easily in the water. ⛵

Ship Fun: The caravel was like a sports car of the sea – fast and easy to drive!

They also got better maps and a neat tool called an astrolabe. It helped them know where they were by looking at the stars. ⭐

The First Steps

Soon, brave sailors started going on trips. They went further than anyone had gone before! Each time they came back, they told exciting stories about what they saw.

“We saw new kinds of fish!” one sailor said.

“The stars look different down there!” said another.

Each story made more people want to go exploring. Prince Henry smiled. His dream was coming true!

Getting Ready for More

More and more ships left Lisbon’s harbor. Each one carried brave sailors who wanted to see new places. They packed:

Food for many months Maps and tools
Fresh water Gifts for new friends

As the sun set over Lisbon, Prince Henry watched another ship sail away. The age of exploration had begun, and Portugal was leading the way!

Amazing Achievement: Thanks to Prince Henry’s school, Portuguese sailors became the best in the world at finding new places!
