Seeds of Innovation
On a sunny day in 1995, two students bumped into each other on the Stanford University campus. Larry Page was new to the school. Sergey Brin was showing new students around. They didn’t know it yet, but this chance meeting would change the world!
Larry and Sergey were very different. Larry was quiet and liked to think deeply about problems. Sergey was outgoing and loved to crack jokes. But they both shared one big thing – they were super curious about computers! ️
“The internet is like a huge library,” Larry told Sergey one day. “But it’s really hard to find what you’re looking for!”
Sergey nodded. “You’re right! We should make something to help people find things faster.”
The two friends spent hours and hours in the computer lab. They worked on a special way to make searching the internet better. They called their idea “BackRub” at first (silly name, right? ). Later, they changed it to “Google.”
Why did they call it Google?
The name comes from a really big number called a “googol” – it’s a 1 with 100 zeros after it! They chose this name because they wanted to organize the huge amount of information on the internet.
Their big idea was simple but clever: Websites that lots of other websites link to must be important! It’s like when lots of kids say a certain book is good – chances are, it really is good!
“We want to organize the world’s information and make it useful for everyone,” Larry and Sergey would tell their friends.
But not everyone believed in their idea at first. Some professors thought it was too simple. Other students said there were already ways to search the internet. But Larry and Sergey didn’t give up!
They worked day and night in the computer lab. Sometimes they would order pizza and stay up late coding. Their friends thought they were a bit crazy, but Larry and Sergey knew they were onto something big.
One day, they showed their search engine to other students. Everyone was amazed! Their search engine could find things much faster and better than anything else.
They faced a tough choice: should they finish their degrees or follow their dream? Both Larry and Sergey decided to take a break from school. They had a bigger mission now – to help people find information easily on the internet.
“We can always come back to school later,” Larry said to Sergey.
“Yeah,” Sergey replied with a grin. “Right now, we have a world to change!”
Their little project in the Stanford computer lab was about to become something much bigger. All they needed now was a place to work, some computers, and a little bit of money to get started…
Garage Dreams
Larry and Sergey needed a place to build their dream. They found help from Susan Wojcicki, who had a garage in Menlo Park. It wasn’t fancy, but it was perfect for two young inventors!
The garage wasn’t very big. It had bright blue carpet and was full of old boxes. But Larry and Sergey didn’t mind. They set up some old computers on wooden doors that became their desks.
“It’s not much,” Larry said, looking around the garage.
“But it’s our start!” Sergey replied with a smile.
They didn’t have much money. They used their credit cards to buy computer parts. They ate lots of cheap noodles. But they were happy because they were building something special!
Early Google Fun Facts!
• They had a ping pong table in the garage for breaks
• The first Google computer storage was made from Lego blocks
• Their first “office dog” was Susan’s pet!
Every day, more people found out about Google. The little search engine was getting bigger and bigger! Sometimes the computers would get so hot from all the work that they had to leave the garage door open. ️
“One day, everyone will use Google to find things on the internet!” Sergey would say.
But they needed help. Running a search engine wasn’t cheap! They needed money for more computers and to pay for electricity. They tried to get people to invest in their idea.
Many people said no. “There are already too many search engines,” some would say. But Larry and Sergey kept trying. They knew their search engine was special. ✨
There was just one funny problem – the check was made out to “Google Inc.” But Google wasn’t a real company yet!
“We need to make Google a real company,” Larry said.
“And fast!” added Sergey.
They rushed to set up their company. They picked their favorite colors for the Google logo – blue, red, yellow, and green. They wrote down their big goal: to organize all the world’s information.
The garage was getting crowded. They hired their first worker, Craig Silverstein. Now three people worked between the bikes and boxes!
Susan would sometimes bring them snacks. “You guys are working so hard,” she said. “I think you’re going to do great things!”
She was right! The little search engine in the garage was about to become much, much bigger. More people wanted to invest money in Google. Soon, they would need a bigger place to work…
The garage where it all started would become famous. Today, Google owns that house and garage! It’s a special place that shows how big dreams can start in small places.
Breaking Silicon Valley Barriers
Google was growing fast! The garage was getting too small for all their big ideas. Larry and Sergey knew it was time for a change.
“We need more space and more helpers,” Larry said one morning, looking at their crowded garage office.
“And better computers!” added Sergey, as another old computer made funny noises. ️
With their new money, they moved to a real office in Mountain View, California. Everyone called it the Googleplex!
“Look at all this space!” Craig said, spinning around in his new chair.
The Googleplex was fun! It had:
• Free snacks for everyone
• Big balls to sit on instead of chairs
• Slides between floors
But the best part was building their team. Larry and Sergey wanted to hire the smartest, most creative people.
“We don’t just want workers,” Sergey told everyone. “We want Googlers!”
They made their search engine better and faster every day. More people started using Google to find things on the internet.
Google’s Special Rules
1. Don’t be evil
2. Make things that help people
3. Have fun while working
Some days were hard. Sometimes the computers would break. Sometimes their ideas didn’t work. But they never gave up!
“Remember when we worked in the garage?” Larry would say when things got tough.
“Now look at us!” Sergey would answer with a big smile.
They kept making Google better. They added pictures to searches. They made the page load faster. They even put the search bar in different languages so more people could use it!
Other companies started to notice. Yahoo!, a big internet company, wanted to buy Google.
“No thank you,” Larry and Sergey said. “We want to keep making Google our way!”
They were right to believe in themselves. Every day, more people chose Google to help them find things online. The team kept growing bigger and bigger.
“We’re not just building a company,” Larry told the team. “We’re changing how people find information!”
The little search engine that started in a garage was becoming something amazing. But Larry and Sergey weren’t done yet. They had even bigger ideas for Google…
Every morning, more and more people around the world opened their computers and typed: www.google.com. The dream was getting bigger every day!
Expansion and Vision
Google was doing so well! Now Larry and Sergey wanted to make more cool things to help people.
“What if we made email better?” Larry asked one morning, drinking his hot chocolate.
“And maps! People need help finding places,” Sergey added with excitement. ️
“Look how much space you get!” people said. “And it’s free!”
Then came Google Maps. Now people could:
• Get directions anywhere
• Find fun places nearby
• Never get lost again
But the biggest change was coming. Google was ready to become a public company!
“What does that mean?” asked a young Googler.
“It means anyone can own a tiny piece of Google,” Larry explained.
The Google office was super exciting that day! Everyone was watching the stock price go up and up!
Fun at Google
The Google office was like no other! They had:
• Massage chairs
• Free yummy food
• Games rooms
• Nap pods for tired workers
Google was growing bigger around the world. They opened offices in:
• Tokyo
• London
• Paris
• Sydney
“We need to keep making Google fun, even when we’re big,” Sergey told everyone.
They made a special rule: “Don’t be evil.” It meant always do what’s right for people who use Google.
Larry looked at all the happy Googlers working together. “Remember when it was just us in that garage?”
Sergey smiled. “Now look – we’re helping millions of people every day!”
“We’re just getting started,” Larry said. “There’s so much more we can do!”
And he was right! Google wasn’t just about searching anymore. It was becoming part of how people lived every day.
• Gmail for sending messages
• Maps for finding places
• Chrome for surfing the internet
• Docs for writing stories
Every new thing they made helped more people. But Google’s biggest adventures were still to come! More exciting ideas were just around the corner…
Technology Titans
Google was growing bigger and bigger! But Larry and Sergey saw something exciting on the internet – a website called YouTube.
“People love sharing videos!” Sergey said, watching funny cat clips.
“We should make YouTube part of Google,” Larry smiled. And in 2006, they did just that!
But Larry and Sergey weren’t done. They had another cool idea – phones!
“What if we made phones better and smarter?” Larry wondered.
“And let’s make it free for phone makers to use!” Sergey added.
That’s how Android was born! Now lots of phones use Android to:
• Watch videos
• Send messages
• Take pictures
Google was becoming more than just a search company. They were everywhere!
Cool New Things Google Made
• YouTube for watching videos
• Android for phones
• Chrome books for schools
• Google Home for talking to computers
“We’re helping people do so many things!” Larry said proudly.
But being big wasn’t always easy. Sometimes things would break. Sometimes people would get mad.
They needed more helpers! Google grew to have offices all over the world:
• New York City
• Singapore
• Dublin ☘️
• Mumbai
“Look how many friends we have now!” Sergey said, looking at all the Googlers around the world.
“And each one helps make Google better,” Larry nodded.
They started working on super cool future stuff too:
Self-driving cars
Smart robots
Special glasses with computers in them
“We’re not just helping people find things anymore,” Larry said one day.
“We’re helping them do amazing new things they never could before!” Sergey finished.
The little company that started in a garage was now one of the biggest companies in the whole world!
But Google wasn’t done growing. They had big plans to help even more people in new ways…
Making the World Better
Google had grown from a tiny garage to offices all around the world. But Larry and Sergey still had big dreams!
“We want everyone to have information,” Larry said one morning. “Even people in far away places.”
They started special projects to make this happen:
• Super fast internet cables under the ocean
• Free computer classes for kids
• Clean energy to help the Earth
“Knowledge is like a light,” Sergey smiled. “We want to help it shine everywhere!”
Google also started giving money to help good causes:
• Medicine for sick people
• Food for hungry families
• Help after big storms
“Remember when we were just two students with a dream?” Larry asked Sergey one day.
“Now look at all the people we help!” Sergey replied proudly.
Cool Things Google Does Now:
Helps people find anything they want to know
Makes phones and computers work better
Teaches people new things
Works to protect our planet
But what about the future? Google has exciting plans!
“We want to make computers that can think like people,” Larry explained.
“And cars that drive themselves safely,” Sergey added.
• Flying cars
• Robot helpers
• Talking computers ️
• Medicine that fixes people faster
The best part? Google still follows its old rule: “Don’t be evil.”
They want to make cool new things that help people, not hurt them.
From two friends in college to thousands of helpers around the world, Google shows that big dreams can come true!
And every day, they ask the same question: “How can we help more people?”
“The best way to predict the future,” Larry says, “is to build it yourself!”
So what started as a simple search engine has become something amazing – a company that helps billions of people learn, grow, and connect every single day!
And that’s how two curious students changed the world, one search at a time.
