The morning sun painted the mighty Yangtze River gold as Lin Wei rushed through the bustling streets of Nanjing. His heart raced with excitement. Today was no ordinary day – it was the day that would change his life forever.
"I can't be late!" Lin Wei whispered to himself, clutching his precious navigation scrolls. At just fifteen years old, he was about to join the greatest fleet China had ever built.
The imperial docks stretched before him like a forest of wooden masts reaching toward the sky. Hundreds of massive ships filled the harbor. Their red sails fluttered in the breeze like dragon wings. Lin Wei had never seen anything so amazing!
“Young man! Are you the navigator’s apprentice?” called a deep voice.
Lin Wei spun around to face Admiral Zheng He himself – the great commander of China's treasure fleet. The admiral stood tall as a mountain, wearing magnificent robes of blue and gold.
"Y-yes, Admiral!" Lin Wei bowed deeply. "I am Lin Wei."
Admiral Zheng He smiled kindly. "I hear you have quite a talent for the stars and sea routes, young one."
The harbor buzzed with activity. Sailors loaded giant ships with silk, tea, and precious gifts from the Emperor. These would be traded in far-off lands. Maps and charts covered the tables in the navigator's tent, where Lin Wei would work.
"Show me how you would plot our course to the Western Seas," the Admiral requested.
With trembling hands, Lin Wei demonstrated his knowledge of the stars and currents. He had studied navigation since he was small, learning from his father who was also a sailor.

The young navigator looked up at the enormous treasure ships. Their nine masts stretched toward the clouds. Intricate dragons decorated their wooden sides. These vessels used amazing Chinese inventions like:

The morning sun disappeared behind dark clouds as the mighty fleet left Nanjing port. Lin Wei gripped the rail of the flagship as waves rocked the massive vessel. This was his first time at sea!
“Steady now, young one,” smiled Captain Liu, the ship’s experienced navigator. “You’ll find your sea legs soon enough.”
Lin Wei watched in awe as hundreds of ships moved together like a flock of giant birds. Red sails filled with wind. Wooden dragons seemed to dance on the waves. But navigating such a huge fleet was no easy task!

The First Storm
On the fifth day, angry clouds gathered overhead. Thunder boomed like giant drums. ⛈️

“Less salty water means we’re near land!” Lin Wei told Admiral Zheng He excitedly. “Maybe a big river flows into the ocean here!”

The next day, everyone got very excited! A sailor found a strange piece of wood floating in the water. It wasn’t like any wood from China!
“Could there be a whole new land out there?” Lin Wei wondered. “With different trees and animals?”
Admiral Zheng He patted Lin Wei’s shoulder. “Thanks to brave explorers like you, we might find out soon!”
More signs appeared each day. Different birds, new kinds of fish, and strange clouds on the horizon. The whole crew felt it – they were about to discover something amazing! But what mysteries waited ahead in the fog? And would they be ready for what they found? ⛵
