The Young Lion of Carthage
The sun blazed hot over the ancient city of Carthage. A young boy named Hannibal stood tall beside his father, Hamilcar Barca. The great walls of their city sparkled like gold in the morning light.
"Father, tell me again about our mighty city," nine-year-old Hannibal said, his eyes bright with wonder.
Hamilcar smiled at his son. "Carthage is the jewel of the Mediterranean, my boy. Our ships sail to distant lands, and our traders bring riches from every corner of the world."
Young Hannibal lived in a beautiful house with his family. But he didn't spend much time playing like other kids. Instead, he trained hard every day. His father taught him how to:

“Why don’t we go back?” some soldiers asked when things got really hard.
“Because great things are never easy,” Hannibal would answer. “We will show the world what brave people can do!”
Many days passed. The cold was terrible. Food got scarce. Some soldiers and animals fell off the narrow paths. But Hannibal never gave up. He walked with his men, ate the same food, and slept in the snow just like them.
One morning, after weeks of climbing, they reached the top of the mountains. The soldiers could hardly believe their eyes. Below them stretched the green lands of Italy!
“Look!” Hannibal pointed. “There lies Rome. We have done what they said was impossible!”

At Cannae, Hannibal tried something new. He put his army in a special shape, like a smile turned backward. The Romans thought this was silly.
The Roman army was twice as big as Hannibal’s. They charged forward, thinking they would easily win. But Hannibal knew better.
“Wait for it…” he told his soldiers. “Wait… wait…”
As the Romans pushed forward, something amazing happened. Hannibal’s curved line bent back, like a rubber band. The Romans kept pushing, thinking they were winning.
“They’re falling for it!” Hannibal’s officers whispered excitedly.
Then Hannibal gave the signal. His soldiers on the sides moved in, like closing a big hug. The Romans were trapped! They were so crowded together, they couldn’t even lift their swords. ️
The battle was over. Hannibal had won his greatest victory. News spread across all lands:

Fabius, a wise Roman leader, had a new plan. “We won’t fight Hannibal directly,” he told his soldiers. “We’ll wear him down slowly, like water wearing down a rock.”
Hannibal didn’t like this new game. His army would chase the Romans, but they would just run away! ♂️
“Why won’t they fight us?” his soldiers started asking. “We’re getting tired of all this running around.”
Meanwhile, a young Roman general named Scipio was watching everything. He studied how Hannibal fought and learned all his tricks.
“To beat Hannibal,” Scipio said, “we must think like Hannibal!”
Back in Carthage, things weren’t going well. The leaders there weren’t sending Hannibal the help he needed. His army was getting smaller and smaller.
One day, a messenger arrived at Hannibal’s camp with bad news:
“Scipio is attacking Carthage! You must come home to protect our city!”
Hannibal looked sad. He had been in Italy for 15 years, but he hadn’t been able to capture Rome. Now he had to leave without winning.
“Pack up,” he told his army. “We’re going home.”
His soldiers couldn’t believe it. “But what about beating Rome?” they asked.
Hannibal shook his head. “Sometimes even the best plans don’t work out the way we want.”

The battle started with a loud trumpet blast. The elephants charged forward, but something went wrong. The noise and confusion scared them! Some elephants turned around and ran back into Hannibal’s own army!
Now the real fighting began. Swords clashed and shields banged together. Both sides fought bravely. ️
But Scipio had learned from watching Hannibal. He used one of Hannibal’s own tricks – hiding strong soldiers behind his front lines. When Hannibal’s army pushed forward, Scipio’s hidden soldiers attacked from the sides!
“We’re surrounded!” Hannibal’s soldiers cried.
For the first time in his life, Hannibal knew he was going to lose a big battle. His heart felt heavy as he watched his army start to break apart.

But the Romans were scared. They didn’t trust Hannibal, even though he wasn’t fighting anymore.
“As long as Hannibal lives, Rome isn’t safe!” the Roman leaders said.
They sent people to spy on Hannibal. They told lies about him to make him look bad. Finally, they sent soldiers to arrest him!
But Hannibal was too clever. Before they could catch him, he escaped on a fast ship. He sailed away from his beloved Carthage for the last time.
A Hero Without a Home
Hannibal traveled to many places. He helped other kings and cities fight against Rome. Even though he was old now, his mind was still sharp. He was still the clever general who had crossed the Alps! ️
But Rome never stopped hunting him. They sent soldiers everywhere he went. Finally, when he was about 64 years old, they found him in a place called Bithynia.
Hannibal looked at the Roman soldiers surrounding his house. He smiled sadly and said:
“Let us free Rome from their long worry, since they think it takes too long to wait for an old man’s death.”
Then he drank poison he had kept in a ring. He chose to die free rather than be captured. ⚔️
