A Boy from Tennessee
In a small log cabin in North Carolina, on November 2, 1795, a baby named James Knox Polk was born. His family soon moved to Tennessee, where young James would grow up on a farm.
Little James wasn't like other kids. He got sick a lot and couldn't play rough games. But that didn't stop him from being smart and working hard! His mom and dad made sure he learned to read and write really well.
“I may not be the strongest, but I can be the smartest,” young James would say to himself when he felt down.
One day, when James was 17, something scary happened. He got very sick with stones in his body! The doctor had to do surgery. Back then, surgery was super dangerous. But James was brave and got better. After that, he decided nothing would stop him from doing big things.
Learning from a Hero
James grew up hearing stories about a brave soldier named Andrew Jackson. Jackson was like a superhero to many people in Tennessee. He fought in wars and stood up for what he believed in.
When James got older, he got to meet Jackson! Jackson became like a teacher to James. He taught him about being a leader and helped him join politics.
The Big Surprise
Years later, James worked very hard in politics. He became the governor of Tennessee! But some people still didn't think he was important enough to be president.
In 1844, all the important politicians met to pick who would run for president. They couldn't agree on anyone! Then something amazing happened. Someone suggested James Polk.
"Who is James Polk?" many people asked.
But James had a secret weapon – he knew exactly what he wanted to do as president. He wanted to make America bigger and stronger. He told everyone his ideas, and they liked what they heard!
People started calling him the "Dark Horse" because no one expected him to win. It's like when the slowest-looking horse in a race turns out to be the fastest!

“Remember the Alamo!” the soldiers would shout, thinking about a famous battle in Texas.
Brave Leaders
A smart general named Zachary Taylor led the American army. Everyone called him “Old Rough and Ready” because he wore simple clothes and didn’t mind getting dirty. ✈️
Another brave leader was Captain Robert E. Lee. He was very good at making plans. His soldiers trusted him and followed his orders carefully.
Big Battles
The American army won many battles. They marched all the way to Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. The Mexican people were very brave too, but they couldn’t stop the American army.
Some Americans didn’t like the war. They said, “This isn’t right! We shouldn’t take land from Mexico.” But Polk believed he was doing what was best for America.
A New Deal
After two years of fighting, Mexico was tired. They made a deal with President Polk. America would pay Mexico $15 million, and Mexico would give up a lot of land.
This new land included what we now call California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of other states. It was more land than anyone expected!
After the Fighting
The soldiers came home to their families. Many were happy, but some were sad about friends they lost in the war. ️
President Polk had kept another one of his big promises. America was growing bigger and stronger. But getting all this new land also brought new problems.
People started arguing about whether slavery should be allowed in the new land. This was a very hard question that would cause more trouble later.

Making Peace, Growing Bigger
After the big war with Mexico, President Polk had another important job to do. He needed to make peace with Britain about the Oregon Territory. This was a huge piece of land in the northwest part of America.
The Oregon Problem
Both America and Britain wanted Oregon. It had tall trees, clean rivers, and lots of animals. People called it “Oregon Country.”
“Fifty-Four Forty or Fight!” some Americans shouted. They wanted all of Oregon Country, all the way up to Alaska. But Polk knew another war would be bad.
Making a Smart Choice
Instead of fighting, Polk talked with the British leaders. He was good at making deals.
“We can share this beautiful land,” Polk said to Britain. “Let’s draw a line and be good neighbors.”
The British thought this was a good idea. They liked Polk’s friendly way of talking. They agreed to split Oregon Country at the 49th parallel – a line that went east to west.
Drawing the Line
America got what we now call Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Britain got what became part of Canada. Both sides were happy with the deal.
New Homes in New Lands
Soon, many families started moving to Oregon Country. They packed their wagons and traveled on the Oregon Trail.
The journey was long and hard. They crossed big rivers, tall mountains, and wide deserts. But they were excited about starting new lives in the west.
Changes for Everyone
The Native American people who already lived in Oregon saw many changes. More and more settlers came to build farms and towns.
Polk tried to make rules to help everyone get along. But it wasn’t easy. The Native Americans wanted to keep their way of life, and the settlers wanted to build new homes.

Now America was much bigger! It stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. People called this “sea to shining sea.” ️

People needed ways to travel between the old states and the new territories. Polk helped build new roads and trails. Some people even started talking about building a railroad across the whole country!
