In a small garage in Albuquerque, two young friends named Bill Gates and Paul Allen had a big dream. They wanted to make computers that everyone could use!
“Hey Paul, what if we could make computers fun and easy?” Bill asked one day, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
“That would be amazing!” Paul replied. “But most people don’t even know what computers are.”
Bill and Paul spent hours and hours writing special instructions called “code.” They worked in Bill’s garage, drinking lots of soda and eating pizza. Sometimes they worked all night long!
“We can change the world with computers,” Bill would say, typing away on his keyboard.
But it wasn’t easy. Sometimes their code didn’t work right. Sometimes their computers broke down. But they never gave up!
One day, Paul ran into Bill’s garage, waving a magazine. “Look at this!” he shouted. “They’re making smaller computers now. We could write programs for these!”
The Big Decision
Bill and Paul had to make a choice. Should they stay in school or start their own computer company? It was scary to think about.
“What should we call our company?” Paul wondered.

Microsoft was growing bigger and bigger. They needed:

“Remember when we worked in that garage?” Paul asked Bill one day.

“What if we could make computers show colorful pictures?” Bill wondered.
