The Royal Twins
Long ago, in a land far away, there lived a kind king named Numitor. He ruled a beautiful city called Alba Longa. The king had a daughter named Rhea Silvia, who was as pretty as a flower.
But not everyone was nice in Alba Longa. The king's mean brother, Amulius, wanted to be king himself! One dark night, Amulius took the crown from Numitor and made himself king. He was not a good king at all.
Rhea Silvia had two baby boys. They were twins! She named them Romulus and Remus. The babies were special because their daddy was Mars, the god of war.
But mean King Amulius was scared. He thought the twins might grow up and take his crown away. He ordered his guards to take the babies away.
"Put them in a basket," he yelled. "Then put the basket in the river!"
The guards felt bad, but they had to follow orders. They put tiny Romulus and Remus in a wooden basket. Then they placed it on the Tiber River. The basket floated away like a little boat. ♂️
But something magical happened! The basket didn't sink. It floated until it reached a quiet spot by the river bank. There, under a fig tree, the basket got stuck.
A mother wolf heard the babies crying. She had just lost her own baby wolves. The mother wolf came down to the river. Instead of being scary, she was very gentle. She took care of Romulus and Remus just like they were her own wolf cubs!
“She fed them and kept them warm,” whispered the people who saw this amazing sight. “It must be a sign from the gods!”
A kind shepherd named Faustulus was walking by the river one day. He heard babies laughing and saw the most amazing thing – two little boys playing with a wolf! Faustulus knew this was special. He took Romulus and Remus home to his wife Acca Larentia.
“We will raise them as our own,” said Faustulus to his wife. “These boys are meant for great things.”
And so began the story of Romulus and Remus, the twin boys who would one day do something amazing – build a city called Rome! But first, they had to grow up and learn many important things.
Every night, Faustulus would tell the boys stories about brave heroes. The twins would listen with big eyes, dreaming about their own adventures. They didn't know yet that they would have the biggest adventure of all!
Growing Up Strong
Romulus and Remus grew up on the green hills near the Tiber River. Every day was a new adventure for the twins!
The boys loved to run and play in the fields. They were very fast and strong. Other kids would say:
“Look at those two run! They’re as quick as wolves!”
Faustulus taught them many important things. They learned to:
- Take care of sheep
- Find food in the forest
- Build shelters from sticks and leaves
- Be brave and help others
One day, while watching the sheep, Remus saw some bad men trying to steal their neighbor’s animals. He called to his brother:
“Romulus! Come quick! We must help!”
The twins worked together to stop the thieves. They were very brave! News of their bravery spread through all the hills. ♂️ ♂️
But sometimes the twins would fight with other shepherds. These fights made Faustulus worry. He knew something the boys didn’t know – they were really princes!
“My dear boys,” he said, “there’s something very important you need to know. You are not ordinary shepherd boys. You are the grandsons of King Numitor!”
Romulus and Remus were surprised! They learned about their mother Rhea Silvia and the mean King Amulius who had tried to hurt them.
The twins started to show different personalities:
Romulus became very serious. He would sit and think about big plans.
Remus was more playful. He liked to make jokes and have fun.
But both brothers shared one big dream – to build their own city someday!
They started practicing being leaders. They helped other shepherds protect their sheep. They made fair rules for their games. Other kids looked up to them.
The twins grew stronger and smarter every day. They never forgot what Faustulus taught them about being kind and brave. But now they also knew they were princes!
Some people started to whisper about the special twins who lived on the hills. They said the boys had magic powers from their father Mars. The twins didn’t know if this was true, but they knew they wanted to do great things.
They promised each other they would always stick together. They would build something amazing – something that would last forever!
A City in the Making
The time had come for Romulus and Remus to make their big dream come true! ️ They wanted to build a wonderful new city.
One morning, Romulus pointed to the beautiful hills near the Tiber River:
“Look, brother! These seven hills would be perfect for our city!”
But Remus shook his head and pointed to another spot:
“No, Romulus! The city should be over there. It’s safer!”
Romulus loved the Palatine Hill. It was tall and strong, just like him. He said:
“From here, we can see everything! Our city will be safe and beautiful.”
But Remus wanted the Aventine Hill. He thought it was better because:
- It was closer to the river
- The ground was softer for building
- More people could live there
- It had more trees for wood
The brothers decided to ask the gods for help. They would watch for special birds to show them the right place.
Remus saw six birds fly over his hill. He jumped up happy:
“Six birds! The gods choose my hill!”
But then twelve birds flew over Romulus’s hill! He shouted:
“Look! Twelve birds! The gods like my spot better!”
Now they had an even bigger problem! Remus said he saw his birds first. Romulus said he saw more birds. Neither brother would give up.
Romulus started drawing lines in the dirt where he wanted the city walls. He grabbed some tools and began to work. ️
Remus watched his brother work. He felt sad and mad at the same time. He kicked at the dirt lines Romulus had made.
Their friends tried to help them make up. One old shepherd said:
“Brothers should work together, not fight! Your city needs both of you!”
But the twins were too angry to listen. Each wanted his own way. Each thought he knew best. The happy brothers who used to do everything together now barely spoke to each other.
Romulus kept working on his city. He made plans for tall walls and strong buildings. But his heart felt heavy. He missed laughing with his brother.
Remus watched from far away. He also felt sad. But he was too proud to say sorry. The fight was getting bigger and bigger.
The Birth of Rome
The sun rose over the Palatine Hill as Romulus began to build his city. He picked up his plow and started drawing a special line in the dirt.
“This line will be our city wall,” Romulus told his helpers. “Nothing will cross it!”
All morning, Romulus worked hard. He marked where the city gates would go. He showed where houses would stand. His dream was coming true! ️
But Remus was still very angry. He watched from far away as his brother worked. Then he had a bad idea.
Remus walked up to where Romulus was working. Everyone got quiet. Remus looked at the line in the dirt and laughed:
“These tiny walls won’t keep anyone out!”
Then Remus did something terrible. He jumped over the sacred line!
“See? Your walls are no good!” Remus shouted. “Anyone can jump over them!”
Romulus was shocked. His face turned red with anger:
“How dare you! That line is sacred!”
In his anger, Romulus grabbed his sword. He wasn’t thinking clearly. Before anyone could stop him, something awful happened.
Remus fell to the ground. The fight was over, but at a terrible cost. Romulus had hurt his own brother!
The helpers stood silent. No one knew what to say. Romulus hugged his brother one last time and whispered:
“I’m so sorry, Remus. I never meant for this to happen.”
That day, Romulus buried his brother with great honor. He put special gifts in the grave and said prayers to the gods.
After many days of crying, Romulus knew he had to finish what they started. He would build the greatest city ever – in memory of Remus.
“This city will be called Roma,” he said. “And it will last forever!”
The workers returned. They built strong walls of stone. They made beautiful temples and houses. Soon, the hill was full of new buildings. ️
People came from all around to live in the new city. They heard about the brave king who worked alongside his people to build something amazing.
But at night, when Romulus was alone, he would look at the stars and think of Remus. He wished they could have built the city together, as brothers should.
A City Rises
The morning bells rang through Roma’s streets. Romulus stood on his hill, watching his city grow. ️ So much had changed since that sad day with Remus.
“We need rules to make our city strong,” Romulus told his helpers. “Good rules make good people.”
First, Romulus picked special helpers called senators. They wore purple stripes on their clothes to show they were important.
• Be kind to guests
• Help your neighbors
• Work hard every day
• Honor the gods
• Protect the city
But Roma had a big problem. There weren’t many women in the city! Most of the people who came to live there were men.
“How will our city grow without families?” worried the senators.
Romulus had an idea. He invited their neighbors, the Sabine people, to a big party!
“Welcome to Roma!” said Romulus to the Sabine families. “Let’s celebrate together!”
The party was fun, with dancing and games. But Romulus had a secret plan. When he gave a signal, the Roman men grabbed the Sabine women and carried them away!
Soon, the Sabine army marched to Roma. They wanted to fight! ⚔️
“Prepare for battle!” Romulus called to his soldiers. “We must defend our city!”
But something amazing happened. The Sabine women ran between the two armies!
“Stop fighting!” they cried. “We are all family now. Romans and Sabines should be friends!”
The fighting stopped. Romulus and the Sabine king shook hands. They decided to join their peoples together as one big family!
Romulus built a special army to protect the city. They were called legions, and they were very brave. ️
He also made sure everyone had work to do:
“Some will be farmers, some builders, some traders. Everyone helps make Roma great!”
The city grew bigger every day. New houses went up. Markets filled with food and goods. Children played in the streets. ♂️
He thought about how proud Remus would be to see their dream coming true. Roma was becoming the greatest city in the world!
People started telling stories about Roma. They said it was blessed by the gods. They said it would last forever.
“As long as we work together,” Romulus told his people, “nothing can stop Roma from growing!”
And he was right. Roma kept getting bigger and stronger. More people came to live there every day. They all wanted to be part of Romulus’s wonderful city.
The Eternal City
Years passed, and Roma grew into the most amazing city anyone had ever seen. Romulus was now an old man with gray hair, but his eyes still sparkled when he looked at his city.
“Look how far we’ve come,” Romulus said to his oldest friend. “From a tiny hill to a mighty city!”
The streets buzzed with life. Children played games while their parents worked in shops and markets. ♀️ Farmers brought fresh food every day. Artists made beautiful things.

One stormy day, Romulus walked to the special place where he and Remus first dreamed of building a city. Lightning flashed across the sky! ⚡

Suddenly, a bright light filled the sky. When it cleared, Romulus was gone! Some say the gods took him up to the stars because he built such a wonderful city.
They chose a new leader, but they never forgot Romulus and Remus. Parents told their children the story of the twin brothers who were saved by a wolf.
“Tell us again about the twins!” children would beg. “Tell us about how Roma began!”
The story spread far and wide. People everywhere heard about the magical city that two brothers had built. Many wanted to see it for themselves.
Even today, thousands of years later, you can visit Roma. It’s still there, full of old buildings and new ones too. Millions of people go there every year! ️
“Look!” tour guides say. “This is where Romulus and Remus once stood. This is where their dream began!”
The story of the twins teaches us important things. It shows us that dreams can come true if we work hard. It reminds us that families should stick together.
And most importantly, it tells us that even small beginnings can lead to amazing things!
