The Wolf's Children
Long ago, in a place called Alba Longa, two tiny baby boys lay crying in a wooden basket. These boys were special - they were twins named Romulus and Remus. Their uncle, a mean king named Amulius, had ordered them to be thrown into the river Tiber.
"The babies must go!" ordered King Amulius, his face red with anger. "They could grow up to take my throne!"
The servant carrying the basket felt sad for the babies. Instead of throwing them into the deep water, he gently placed the basket near the river bank. The basket floated softly in the shallow water, protected by the branches of a fig tree.
Fun Fact: The fig tree where the babies were found became known as the Ficus Ruminalis - a very special tree in Roman history!
As night fell, something amazing happened. A mother wolf heard the babies crying. She had just lost her own cubs and still had milk to give. The wolf crept close to the basket and found the hungry twins.
"Whimper... whimper," went the babies.
The wolf didn't eat them! Instead, she carried them to her cave and fed them her milk. She kept them warm and safe. A friendly woodpecker brought them food too!
Growing Up Wild
Days turned into weeks, and weeks into years. The wolf-boys grew strong and brave. They could run as fast as deer and climb trees like squirrels. One day, a shepherd named Faustulus found them.
"By the gods!" he gasped. "These cannot be ordinary children!"
Faustulus took the boys home to his wife Acca Larentia. They raised Romulus and Remus as their own sons, teaching them to:
• Take care of sheep• Hunt in the forest• Be kind and brave• Help others in need• Stand up for what's right
A Special Destiny
As young men, Romulus and Remus learned the truth about who they were - princes! They decided to build their own city. But they couldn't agree where to put it.
"The Palatine Hill is perfect!" said Romulus.
"No, the Aventine Hill is better!" argued Remus.
They asked the gods to help them decide. Each brother watched for special birds. Romulus saw twelve eagles - more than Remus did. This meant Romulus should pick the spot for their city.
The First Wall
Romulus started building a wall around his chosen hill. But Remus was still angry about losing. He jumped over Romulus's wall to show it wasn't good enough.
"See how easy it is to cross?" Remus laughed.
This made Romulus very mad. In his anger, something terrible happened - Romulus hurt his brother so badly that Remus died.
Important: This sad event taught everyone that breaking rules and making fun of others can lead to bad things.
Romulus felt horrible about what happened. To make up for it, he worked harder than ever to build his city. He named it Roma (Rome) after himself. The little settlement on top of the hill would one day become the greatest city in the world! ️
People came from all around to live in Rome. They built houses and temples. They made laws and started families. Romulus became their first king, and he tried to be wise and fair.

Romulus stood tall on the Palatine Hill, looking at his growing city. The morning sun made the new buildings shine. People were busy building homes and shops. ️

The Clever Plan
Romulus had an idea. He made Rome a special place where anyone could come to live, even if they had problems in other cities. Soon, many people came to Rome:
• Farmers looking for new land• Workers wanting jobs• People seeking a fresh start• Brave soldiers ready to help

A City Without Moms
But there was a big problem. Most of the new people were men! The city needed families to grow.
"We need to find wives," said one of the men. "But none of the nearby towns will let their daughters marry us."
Romulus thought hard. Then he planned a big party. He invited people from all the nearby towns, especially the Sabines. The Sabines brought their daughters to the party.
The Great Party Surprise
During the party, Romulus gave a special signal. The Roman men grabbed the Sabine women and carried them off to be their wives! This made the Sabine people very angry.
"This means war!" shouted the Sabine king, Titus Tatius. ⚔️
Important: The Sabine women became happy in Rome. They made new families and helped the city grow.
Making Peace
The Sabines attacked Rome. But something amazing happened during the battle. The Sabine women, now Roman wives, ran between the fighting men.
"Stop!" they cried. "Don't fight! You are all our family now!"
The men stopped fighting. Romulus and King Tatius decided to be friends. The Sabines came to live in Rome too!
Building a Better City
Now Rome was getting bigger and stronger. Romulus made new rules to help everyone live together:
He divided people into groups called "tribes"
He picked helper leaders called "senators"
He made laws to keep everyone safe
He built temples to honor the gods
Rome grew and grew. More houses went up on all seven hills. People built roads to connect everything. Markets opened where people could buy food and things they needed.
The First King's Last Days
One day, when Romulus was very old, something strange happened. He was checking his army during a big storm. ⚡
"Look!" shouted a soldier. "The king is gone!"
Nobody ever saw Romulus again. Some people said the gods took him up to live in the sky. They said he became a god called Quirinus.

Numa the Wise

• Taught people to be kind to each other

Tullus the Brave
The next king was Tullus. He was different from Numa. "Rome must be strong!" he would say. He trained soldiers and built better walls.
"Look at our army!" people would say. "Now we can protect our homes!"
Ancus the Builder
King Ancus loved to build things. He made Rome bigger and better:
"We need a bridge over the river," he told his workers. Soon, the first bridge crossed the Tiber River!
He also built:
- New roads for trading
- A big prison for bad people
- Walls around the whole city
- Rome's first port by the sea
Tarquinius the Rich
The fifth king came from far away. He brought new ideas to Rome:
Important Changes: He built the big circus for games and races!
The city was getting fancier. People wore pretty clothes. They had nice dishes to eat from. Rome wasn't just strong anymore - it was beautiful too! ✨
Servius the Fair
King Servius had new ideas about being fair. "Everyone should help Rome," he said. "But people who have more should help more."
He counted all the people and their things. Then he made rules about how much each person should help the city. Poor people helped a little. Rich people helped a lot.
The Last King
The last king was called Tarquinius the Proud. He was mean!
"Do what I say!" he would shout. He made people work too hard building big things. He didn't listen when people were unhappy.
The people of Rome didn't like having a mean king. They started thinking about new ways to run their city.
Changes in the City
During the time of the kings, Rome changed a lot:
People learned new things:
- How to write stories
- Ways to build better houses
- Making pretty art and music
- Growing more food
Rich people lived in big houses. Poor people lived in small apartments. Some people had slaves to help them. Others worked hard in shops or farms.
Remember: The kings helped Rome grow from a tiny town to a big city! But soon, Rome would need a new way to run things...
The streets were busy with people buying and selling things. Farmers brought food to the markets. Workers built temples and houses. Soldiers marched through the streets.

The people of Rome were tired of mean King Tarquinius. One day, something happened that changed everything!
The Last Straw
The king's son did something very bad to a lady named Lucretia. She was brave and told everyone what happened. The people were so angry!
"We don't want kings anymore!" they shouted. "No more mean rulers!"
Big Moment: A man named Brutus led the people to chase King Tarquinius away! ♂️
A New Way to Rule
The people of Rome had a great idea. "Let's pick our leaders," they said. "And let's change them every year!"
They made new rules:
• Two leaders instead of one king
• Leaders must listen to the people
• Everyone gets a say in big choices
• No more mean rulers allowed
The Senate Gets Stronger
"We need wise people to help make choices," said Brutus. The Senate became very important. It was like a big group of helpers who made rules.
The Senate met in a special building. They wore white togas with purple stripes. Everyone knew they were important!
Rich and Poor People
There were two big groups in Rome:
Patricians (Rich People):
"We have the most money, so we should make the rules!" they said. They lived in big houses and had nice things.
Plebeians (Regular People):
"We work hard too! We should have a say!" They were farmers, workers, and soldiers.
Fighting for Rights
The plebeians weren't happy. One day, they all left Rome!
"We won't come back until things are fair," they said.
The patricians needed the plebeians. Who would grow food? Who would work in shops? They had to make things better.
New Rule: Plebeians got their own special helpers called Tribunes. These helpers could say "NO!" if rich people were being unfair. ✋
Making Rome Better
The new way of ruling made Rome stronger:
"Look at our city now!" people said proudly. "Everyone can help make it better!"
They built:
- New temples for the gods
- Better roads for trading
- Stronger walls for safety
- Big markets for shopping
Working Together
Even though rich and poor people sometimes fought, they learned to work together. They all wanted Rome to be great!
Some cool things happened:
- Poor people could become rich through hard work
- Everyone could vote for leaders
- New laws were written down
- The army got stronger
