The Call of Crete
Maya's heart raced as she held the strange bronze disk in her hands. The swirling patterns reminded her of waves in the ocean. She found it in Grandma's old chest while cleaning the attic.
"What do you think it is, Dad?" Maya asked, turning the disk to catch the sunlight streaming through the window.
Her father adjusted his glasses and peered at the object. "Those symbols look Minoan. That's the ancient civilization from Crete."

"This way!" Sofia pulled them behind a wall. She pressed on an old stone, and part of the floor slid open!
They climbed down into a secret room. Clay pots lined the walls, and in the middle sat a small clay tablet.
"Your grandmother found this room," Sofia said. "The tablet tells a story about islands trading secrets. The bronze disks were like special passes!"
Maya picked up the tablet. Strange marks covered its surface.
"It's in Linear A - the oldest writing we've found! Your grandmother was learning to read it when..." Sofia's voice trailed off.
"When what?" Maya asked.
