The Burning of Athens
The sun rose over Athens on a scary day in 480 BC. People ran through the streets. Moms grabbed their kids. Dads packed food. Everyone was leaving their homes! ♀️
"Hurry, my children!" called Maria, an Athenian mom. "The Persian army is coming!"
The mighty Persian king Xerxes had brought a huge army to attack Athens. His soldiers marched toward the city with their shiny weapons and colorful flags. There were so many soldiers – like ants at a picnic!
Themistocles, the brave leader of Athens, stood on a hill watching his city. He had dark curly hair and kind eyes. But today, his face was very serious. He knew what he had to do.
"We must save our people first," he said to the other leaders. "Our city can be rebuilt, but our people are special."
All the Athenians sailed away to a small island called Salamis. From there, they watched as the Persian army entered their empty city.

The Persians were very angry to find Athens empty. They decided to burn everything!
"Look!" cried little Andreas, pointing from the island. "They're burning our homes!"
Smoke rose into the sky like black snakes. The beautiful temples fell down. The marketplace where people bought food was gone. The school where children learned was destroyed.
“Our homes may burn, but our spirit never will,” Themistocles told his people. “We will build again, better than before!”

“But we’re not really running, are we?” asked little Andreas.
“No, brave boy,” Themistocles winked. “We’re setting a trap!”
The Persian ships were big and heavy. They moved slowly through the water. But the Athenian ships were small and fast, like little fish!
The Great Sea Battle
Themistocles led the Persian ships into the narrow waters between Salamis island and the land. The space was too small for all the big Persian ships!
“Remember our burning city!” Themistocles called out. “Today, we take back our home!”
The battle was amazing! The Athenian ships zipped around like dragonflies. They crashed into the stuck Persian ships. Splash! Crash! Boom!
King Xerxes watched from his golden throne on the shore. His face turned red with anger. His mighty navy was losing!
Victory at Sea
“We did it!” cheered Maria, jumping up and down. “We beat the big Persian army!”
That night, the Athenians had a big celebration on Salamis island. They danced and sang songs about their brave victory.
“Now we can go home,” said an old man with happy tears in his eyes.
Planning the Future
Themistocles gathered everyone around a big fire. “Our city is burned,” he said, “but we will build it again!”
He pulled out a scroll and started drawing plans:

- Bigger, stronger walls
