William the Conqueror: The Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest

The Young Duke’s Dream

In a big castle in Normandy, a young boy named William looked out over his land. The year was 1035, and at just eight years old, he became the Duke of Normandy. But being so young and in charge wasn't easy!

Fun Fact: William was called “William the Bastard” because his parents weren’t married. This made some people think he shouldn’t be in charge.

Little William had to grow up fast. Some mean people didn't want him to be duke. They thought he was too young and not good enough. But William was brave and smart!

"Your Grace," his teacher Robert said one day, "you must learn to be strong. Many people want to hurt you."

William stood up straight and tall. "I will show them I can be a good leader!"

And he did just that! When bad guys tried to take over his castle, William didn't run away. He fought back! His friend Alan helped him stay safe and taught him how to be a warrior.

Growing Stronger

As William grew bigger, he became very good at fighting. He could ride horses better than anyone else, and he was super strong!

One day, William heard about a promise. King Edward of England said William could be king after him! This made William very happy. He started to dream about ruling both Normandy AND England.

"I will be the greatest king ever!" William told his friends. "I will make both lands strong and peaceful."

William worked hard to get ready:
• He learned how to fight with swords
• He studied how to make good laws
• He practiced speaking like a leader
• He made friends with important people

But not everything was easy. Some people still didn't like William. They said mean things about him and tried to make him look bad. But William didn't give up!

"Actions speak louder than words," William would say. He showed everyone he was a good leader by:

Making fair rules
Protecting poor people
Building beautiful churches
Making his army strong

By the time William grew up, he was tall and strong. People stopped calling him names and started respecting him. He married a nice lady named Matilda, and they had lots of children. ‍ ‍ ‍

The Big Dream

One night, William stood on his castle wall. He looked across the sea toward England. The stars twinkled above him like tiny crowns in the sky. ⭐

"Soon," he whispered to himself, "I will be king of England too. I will make both lands great!"

William didn't know it yet, but his biggest adventure was about to begin. Across the sea, things were happening in England that would change his life forever. The old king was getting sick, and soon William would have to fight for his dream.

Even though lots of people didn't believe in him when he was little, William grew up to be one of the strongest leaders ever. He never gave up on his dreams, no matter how hard things got.

The moon shone bright over Normandy that night, and William smiled. He knew in his heart that someday, he would make history.

Rivals and Rumors

Across the sea in England, things were getting exciting! King Edward was getting old and sick. Everyone wondered who would be the next king. The most powerful man in England was Harold Godwinson.

Important Fact: Harold Godwinson was very strong and brave. He came from a rich family and lots of people liked him.

Harold walked through the grand halls of the palace. His fancy boots made clicking sounds on the stone floor.

"My lord Harold," a servant called out, "there's news from the north!"

The news wasn't good. A big, scary Viking named Harald Hardrada wanted to be king too! He was coming with lots of ships and warriors. ⚔️

Three Men Who Wanted to be King

Now there were three men who all wanted the same thing:

• William from Normandy
• Harold from England
• Harald from Norway

King Edward was worried. He didn't know who to pick as the next king. Some days he said William could be king. Other days he liked Harold better.

"The kingdom needs a strong leader," Harold said to his friends. "Someone who knows England and its people."

The Big Storm

One day, Harold went sailing on the sea. A big storm came and pushed his boat to Normandy! ️ William found Harold and was nice to him, but something strange happened.

William made Harold promise to help him become king. Harold said yes, but in his heart, he wasn’t sure he meant it.

Back in England, people were getting worried. They saw strange things in the sky:

"Look!" they shouted. "A star with a tail!" It was Halley's Comet, and many thought it was a bad sign. ☄️

The Fight Begins

Then something big happened! King Edward died. Before he died, some people say he picked Harold to be the next king. Other people say he wanted William.

Harold didn't wait! He quickly became king. When William heard this news, he was very angry!

"Harold promised to help me!" William shouted. "He broke his promise!"

Meanwhile, in the cold north, Harald Hardrada got his Viking ships ready. He thought he should be king too!

Getting Ready to Fight

Now Harold had two big problems:

1. William was angry and wanted to fight

2. Harald Hardrada was coming with his Vikings

Harold looked out from his castle window. He knew he had to protect England from both William and Harald. But how could he fight two armies at the same time?

The wind blew cold from the north. Dark clouds gathered over the sea. Harold could feel it – a big fight was coming. All of England held its breath, waiting to see what would happen next.

In his castle, Harold put on his armor and grabbed his sword. He had to be ready. The biggest fight of his life was about to begin! ⚔️

Building an Army

William stood on the beach in Normandy, watching his workers build ships. The sound of hammers filled the air. He needed lots of boats to take his army across the sea to England.

Fun Fact: William built about 700 ships in just a few months! That’s more ships than you can count on your fingers and toes 100 times!

“My lord,” called out William’s friend Robert, “the knights are coming!”

William smiled as he watched horses and knights arrive from all over Normandy. Each knight brought their own horse, sword, and shield. They wanted to help William become king of England.

Getting Ready for the Big Trip

William knew he needed more than just soldiers. He needed:

• Food for everyone
• Horses
• Weapons
• Warm clothes
• Lots of arrows

“We must be ready for anything,” William told his men. “England is far away, and the sea can be dangerous.”

A Special Blessing

William did something very smart. He asked the Pope, the most important church leader, for help.

The Pope gave William a special flag and said it was okay for him to fight Harold. This made William’s soldiers feel brave and happy!

Every day, more knights came to join William’s army. They practiced fighting together:

“Charge forward!” William would shout, and all the knights would ride their horses in a straight line.

Waiting for the Wind

Finally, everything was ready. The ships were built. The soldiers were trained. The food was packed. But there was one big problem – the wind! ️

“The wind is blowing the wrong way,” said the sailors. “We can’t sail to England yet.”

William and his army had to wait. Days went by. Then weeks. The soldiers started to get worried.

“Maybe this is a bad sign,” some whispered. But William stayed strong.

“We will wait,” he said. “The wind will change.”

A Lucky Break

While William waited, he got some good news! Harald Hardrada and his Vikings had sailed to England. Harold Godwinson had to march north to fight them! ️

“This is perfect,” William said. “While Harold is busy fighting the Vikings, we can sail to England!”

The soldiers kept practicing. They sharpened their swords and took care of their horses. William made sure everyone knew what to do when they got to England.

One morning, a sailor ran to William’s tent. “The wind!” he shouted. “The wind has changed!”

William jumped up and ran outside. The flags were all pointing the right way. It was time!

“Get ready!” William called out to his army. “We sail for England!”

The soldiers loaded the horses onto the ships. They packed their weapons and food. The big wooden boats filled the beach as far as anyone could see.

William put on his armor and climbed onto his special ship. It had a bright red sail and a golden statue on the front. His heart beat fast with excitement. The time had finally come to claim his crown!

Crossing the Sea

The morning sun sparkled on the waves as William’s huge fleet left Normandy. The water looked like it was filled with diamonds. Nearly 700 ships sailed together, their colorful sails bright against the blue sky.

Amazing Fact: William’s ships were so many that they stretched across the sea as far as anyone could see!

William stood at the front of his special ship named “Mora.” It had a beautiful golden figure of a boy blowing a trumpet on its bow.

“Look!” shouted a sailor. “A dolphin is jumping beside us!”

The soldiers took this as a good sign. They smiled and cheered as dolphins played in the waves around their ships.

Landing in England

After sailing all day and night, they finally saw England’s white cliffs early the next morning. William picked a perfect spot to land – a place called Pevensey Bay.

“Be careful as we land,” William told his men. “We don’t know who might be waiting for us.”

But guess what? Nobody was there to stop them! Harold’s army was far away in the north, fighting the Vikings. William’s timing was perfect!

A Funny Start

When William stepped off his ship, something silly happened. He tripped and fell face-first into the sand!

Some soldiers gasped. Was this a bad sign? But William was clever. He grabbed two handfuls of sand and stood up laughing.

“Look!” he shouted. “I have already taken hold of England with both hands!”

Everyone cheered and laughed. They knew their leader could turn even a fall into something good!

Building a Safe Place

William worked fast. He knew he needed a safe place for his army. His men built a wooden fort right away. They called it a castle.

Things they needed to do:
• Build walls
• Make gates
• Dig deep ditches
• Set up guard posts
• Store food and supplies

The castle wasn’t pretty, but it was strong. Now William’s army had a safe place to sleep and keep their horses and food.

Waiting for Battle

News spread fast that William had landed. Farmers and villagers ran away when they saw his army. They went to tell Harold Godwinson that the Normans had come.

William sent scouts to look around. They brought back news about the land and where Harold’s army might be.

While waiting, William made sure his army stayed strong. They ate well, took care of their horses, and kept their weapons sharp.

“Harold will come soon,” William told his men. “We must be ready.”

The Norman knights practiced their moves every day:

“Forward! Together! Stay in line!” William would shout as they practiced charging on their horses.

Getting Ready for the Big Fight

One evening, a scout rode back fast to the castle. “Harold is coming!” he shouted. “He has won against the Vikings and is marching south with his army!”

William gathered his leaders around a big map. They needed to pick the perfect place to fight. ️

“Here,” William pointed to a hill near a place called Hastings. “This is where we will meet Harold’s army.”

The next morning, William led his army out of the wooden castle. They marched toward the hill where they would soon fight one of the most famous battles in history. ⚔️

As the sun set, William looked at his army camping on the hillside. Tomorrow would bring the biggest fight of his life. But he felt ready. His army was strong, his plan was good, and he believed he would win.

The Great Battle

The morning of October 14, 1066, started with a misty sunrise. William and his army stood ready on Senlac Hill. They could see Harold’s English army marching toward them, carrying bright banners with dragons on them.

Battle Fact: Both armies were huge! Each side had thousands of soldiers ready to fight.

William sat tall on his favorite horse. He wore shiny armor that sparkled in the morning sun. ⚔️

“Remember your training!” he called to his knights. “Stay together and be brave!”

The Fighting Begins

A Norman soldier played a song on his trumpet. TUUUUT! That was the signal to start. William’s archers shot their arrows high into the sky. They looked like a rain of sticks falling toward Harold’s army.

The English soldiers held up their shields. They stood close together like a wall. They were very strong and didn’t run away!

A Tricky Plan

William saw that his first plan wasn’t working. Then he had a clever idea. He told some of his knights to do something tricky.

“Pretend to run away!” he ordered. “When the English chase you, turn around and surprise them!”

The plan worked! When the English soldiers ran down the hill to chase the Norman knights, they had to break their strong shield wall. That’s just what William wanted!

The Big Moment

The battle went on all day. Both sides fought very hard. Then something important happened that changed everything.

William’s archers shot their arrows up high into the air. One arrow hit King Harold in the eye! The English king fell, and his army started to get scared and confused.

Victory!

Without their king to lead them, the English army began to run away. William’s knights chased them, but William called out:

“Stop! We have won! The battle is over!”

Important things that helped William win:
• His clever trick of pretending to run away
• His strong knights on horseback
• His smart planning
• His good leadership

After the Battle

As the sun went down, William looked at the battlefield. He had won! He would be the new king of England. But he felt sad about all the brave soldiers who died that day.

William took off his helmet and said a prayer for all the soldiers – both Norman and English. He promised to be a good king for everyone.

That night, the Norman soldiers celebrated their big win. They knew they had just been part of something very important. History would remember this day forever!

William walked among his men, thanking them for being brave. He also started planning what he would do next. Being king of England would be a big job, but he was ready for it.

The Battle of Hastings was over, but William’s biggest adventure – being King of England – was just about to begin!

The guards ran around in confusion, but William stayed calm. He smiled and told everyone not to worry. This showed what a good leader he was!

Making Changes

As the new king, William made lots of changes to England. He wanted to know everything about his new kingdom.

William died in 1087. Before he died, he split his lands between his sons. He gave Normandy to his oldest son Robert and England to his second son William.
