"Ma He! Come inside quickly!" his mother called, her voice shaking with fear.
But it was too late. The Ming soldiers had already surrounded their home. Their armor gleamed in the fading light as they thundered through the village on their mighty horses.
Ma He clutched his toy boat tightly. He had never seen so many soldiers before. Their leader, a tall man with a stern face, pointed directly at him.
"That one," the leader said. "Take him."
Strong hands lifted Ma He onto a horse. As they rode away, he could hear his mother crying. The wooden boat fell from his grip, landing in the dust.
Life Changes Forever
The journey to the imperial palace was long and scary. Ma He missed his family terribly. But he was brave and smart - he watched and learned everything he could.
At the palace, things were very different from his simple village life. The buildings were huge, with red walls and golden roofs that seemed to touch the sky.

"The water here dances differently," said Li Wei, watching the waves. "And look at those strange birds!"
Meeting New Friends
When they reached the African coast, people came out in small boats to greet them.
"Welcome, giant ships from the East!" called the African leaders. Their bright clothes shimmered in the sun.
Zheng He smiled and bowed. "We bring gifts from China," he said through his helper who knew many languages.
